The Bishop's School, Camp in association with The Bishop's Organic Farming (BOF) Club organised a 'CoCo weekend' on November 30 and December 1. The CoCo Market was started by Tanya Kane and Surabhi Ganguly to create a network of organic producers and buyers.
Principal Joel Edwin said, "The vision of the BOF club is to make the student community aware of the need of the hour that is sustainable development. Secondly, understand that the needs of the school kitchen can be fulfilled by the produce of the organic farm." Also present on the occasion were Christopher Gaynor, headmaster, Madhu Hora, dean, Junior College and the staff and students.
Dr Vandana Shiva, a physicist, founder of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, Dehradun, in her opening address, underlined the urgent need for Indians to go back to organic farming and highlighted the disastrous effects brought in by genetically modified (GMO) seeds, pesticides and chemicals.
She stated that the increase in number of deadly diseases are a result of the illegal spraying of chemicals and pesticides. "The moment you plant, you become one with nature. Garden is the ultimate educator," she said encouraging students to learn how to grow for themselves.
The address was followed by a panel discussion on "Sustainable food, farming and biodiversity in mainstream curriculum." The panellists included Dr. Rajashree Joshi, BAIF, Ajinkya Hange, founding farmer, Two Brothers Organic Farms, Hector Andrade, educationist and biodiversity conservator, Anugrah Bhatt from Navdanya and BOF club student representative, Shevaun Pimenta. It was moderated by Tanya Kane.
Shevaun opened the discussion speaking about how teenagers pick up foods that look attractive without caring for their nutriti
onal value. Bhatt said, "It was challenging to go to schools and talk on a new topic. We started with one teacher and few students and gradually the whole school was involved." Hange shared, "Farming is a holistic subject that has many micro-aspects. If we had the subject as part of the curriculum, we would have made this switch earlier." Andrade shared that he had started environmental clubs at the institutes he worked with; and urged schools to take up environmental initiatives involving students and parents.
Dr. Rajasharee encouraged schools to start "kitchen gardens" and seek help from organisations like Krishi Vigyan Kendra to set up the same. The second day began with a street play by the Junior College students, centred around the theme of climate change. Some of the workshops conducted were on composting and minimizing household waste- by Anil Gokarn, and on segregation by Amita Deshpande.
The 'Swacch Team' from PMC conducted a workshop on 'the Red Dot Campaign' raising awareness about proper disposal of sanitary waste. Vinod Bodhankar, founder, 'Sagarmitra' highlighted the pervasive problem of plastic waste and highlighted statistics on the prevalence of plastic consumption by animals.
Workshops on the theme 'best out of waste' were held simultaneously. A panel discussion with the theme 'Segregation will finally affect the health of the World' was presided over by Tanya Kane.  The panel stated how segregation can make a significant impact on the health and welfare of a community.
