AMPERSAND 2019

Chettinad Vidyashram’s inter-school debating competition was back with a bang this June. Hosting the grand 4th edition this year, Ampersand has been a successful platform for talented and budding orators. The majestic debating fest was unique to the fact that it encourages participation among middle school students as well; a chance that they can rarely come across in the Chennai circuit. Apart from the main event - the Parliamentary Debate, this competition offers a range of ancillary events to challenge the participants’ ability to think on their feet and hone their creativity. The inaugural ceremony was presided by Preetika Venkatakrishnan, the Vice President, Trading and Product Development of Karadipath, who addressed the young minds from all over Chennai on the importance of such events that not only help them shape their personalities but also discover a new side of themselves. This preceded a speech by The Principal, Dr. Amudha Lakshmi whose words took the students’ morale to another level and energized them to the brim.

Reputed schools from all over Chennai such as BVM, Velammal and Vaels to name a few, sent their students which in turn facilitated healthy competition. The participants were judged by prominent debaters and public speakers. The second day of this event was presided over by Nina John, an excellent orator and a distinguished toastmaster. The main event for Ampersand 2019 took place on the grand stage of Chettinad Vidyashram. Both the teams were fired up and ready to give it their all. A rapid exchange of arguments and humorous rebuttals left the judges awestruck. During the closing ceremony, she enlightened the young minds on the importance of quality communication skills and the power of such platforms on young sapiens. The Principal’s speech was perhaps the most influential on the students, with many of them looking much brighter than before after hearing her words. Energy started to rise during the awards ceremony and the entire hall was filled with thunderous applause for the winners.
