Japan’s Heritage Island Under Threat

Pest from pinewood is threatening a world heritage site in Japan.  Known as Anematode, this pest has affected an area four times larger than normal on the Japanese island of Yakushima. The land is home to an endangered pine species. The site has been included in the Unesco list since 1993.

Local authorities are now planning to destroy 200 cubic metres of dead pinewood to eradicate the pest. They will further initiate felling of trees near the western area of the island where the forest is located.

According to local authorities, the plant pest began spreading in summer and has been visible in a wooded area bordering Mount Mocchomudake, a habitat of intense greenery that now gives a look of dead trees. Nematodes — microscopic worms —  are transported by wood-eating beetles, through which the pests can spread like an infectious disease and can damage 1,000 specimens of the Pinus amamiana. Pinus amamiana, similar to the Chinese Armand pine species, grows only in the islands of Yakushima and Tanegashima.
