Does Hiking Impact Wildlife?

A study says recreation activities in protected areas may negatively impact wildlife by causing animals to flee. But education and good practices can take care of the problem. Let’s read...

Cam Honan has been hiking since he was 11 years old. “Growing up in Australia, my family lived close to a large forest and I often used to go exploring there with my German Shepherds,” says Honan. “I believe that hiking is a great way of increasing environmental consciousness. The more time people spend out in nature, the greater the likelihood that they will become personally involved in conservation issues,” says Honan who talks about his hiking adventures on www.thehikinglife.com.

Why is the research misleading
He feels the basic premise of this research is a little misleading because “the impact of increased hiking numbers in popular wilderness areas is a symptom, rather than the actual cause of the issue.”  Poor environmental management practices on behalf of the authorities in charge of the protected areas in question are the root cause of the problem, according to Honan.

What should be done
There needs to be an increased emphasis on outdoor education. For example: tips for interacting with wildlife, Leave No Trace principle and when necessary, limit the amount of hikers in popular areas.  Hiking is an outdoor recreational activity that should be encouraged, rather than discouraged. “As I mentioned above, the key is education and good management practices,” says Honan.
