Review- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

A Great Starter For Someone New To Star Wars

CAST: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker

DIRECTION: Gareth Edwards

GENRE: Sci-Fi

DURATION: 2 hours 14 minutes

STORY: Scientist/ engineer Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) tries to escape from the Galactic Empire when Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) leaves him no choice but to complete work on the Death Star – a space station capable of destroying entire planets in one swift stroke. Years later, his daughter Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) sets out to redeem him, with the help of a rag tag groups of Rebels in the latest cinematic entry to the ‘Star Wars’ series.

REVIEW: Three sequels and three prequels later, 1977’s ‘Star Wars IV – A New Hope’ continues to influence a vast number of sci-fi stories and filmmakers of various genres. It has also been critically analysed and dissected, revealing some glaring flaws over the years. ‘Rogue One’ exists solely to answer one of these apparent plot holes, but surprisingly pulls together an exciting adventure for new viewers combined with ample cameos by familiar faces for die-hard fans.

This is made possible by the strong story penned by John Knoll and Gary Whitta along with an equally impressive screenplay by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. The new characters played by a multi-racial cast put in overall respectable performances – Felicity Jones does her rebellious best as the female lead protagonist, while Deigo Luna's turn as Cassian Andor tries to be very un-Han Solo-like. The true scene-stealers come in the form of the lovably sarcastic droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) and Donnie Yen’s blind samurai Chirrut Imwe. Strong supporting performances by the reliable Mads Mikkelsen, Riz Ahmed and particularly Ben Mendelsohn as the ambitiously evil Death Star Director round off this ensemble along with some returning characters. Film Director Gareth Edwards excels at putting together massive set pieces with relentless action, especially during the final battle between the Rebels and the Empire. However, he tends to slightly falter during some of the dramatic sequences and while this doesn’t undermine the movie’s overall impact, it holds 'Rogue One' back from reaching great emotional beats.

The massive ‘Star Wars’ universe has enough on and off-screen content for fans to chew on, so this prequel/ sequel feels unnecessary at first. Sitting between the 3rd and 4th titles of the series, 'Rogue One' manages to undo some of the glaring issues of episodes I to III, while building even more intrigue for the original trilogy IV, V & VI. In fact, it is now a great starting point for someone new to this franchise. To quote one of the familiar lines from this space opera – “the Force is strong with this one”!
