7 Songs To ‘Light Up’ Your Mood

The Diwali Playlist

Festivals mean fun, food and celebration, and what is fun without foot-tapping numbers that you can dance to until midnight, or more.

Trust Bollywood to give us peppy songs, from the usual happy naach gana ones to festival specific compositions. This Diwali, we bring you a fabulous playlist to light up your home and make your celebration special. Love, laughter and music to all…enjoy

1. Happy Diwali (Home Delivery, 2005): Full of joy and positivity, this song is catchy and celebrates the spirit of Diwali. Picturised on kids, it is ideal for bringing cheer to your home. The beats are western but the heart is all Indian and it is so very apt for the occasion.

2. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham title track (Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham, 2001): This one is a classic (sung by Lata Mangeshkar) with a traditional yet contemporary look and feel and has popular actors like SRK, Amitabh Bachchan and the rest of the cast singing and dancing in regal-looking designer clothes. There are diyas, a loving mom, sibling bonding, romance and tons of bling – so play it for your family.

3. Dholi Taro Dhol Bhaje (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999): A lively number by Kavita Krishnamurthy, it is infectiously happy and is just right for Diwali. Besides great music (it is high on dholak beats), the song picturised on Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai is dazzlingly colourful with a fantastically choreographed dance, and the background is lit with grand thalis, tinkling bells, diyas and tons of marigold flowers. Sing along, dance along and party hard.

4. Aye Abke Saal Diwali (Haqueeqat, 1964): This moving song penned by lyricist Kaifi Azmi and sung with a lot of heart by Lata Mangeshkar is almost from a bygone era. Meant for soldiers and their families about what they go through (it is based on the Indo-China war of 1961), this is not exactly a happy song and has a melancholy feel to it. But you could listen to it while making rangolis or lighting up diyas and remember the Indian Army who are away from home and didn’t get the opportunity to celebrate Diwali with their loved ones. The song, though from the black & white era, symbolises the current mood of the nation and is, therefore, relatable.

5. Selfie Le Le Re (Bajrangi Bhaijan, 2015): After playing dress up in Diwali, it is time for dozens of selfies. The festival of lights, especially, can light up your Instagram, snapchat and facebook with beautiful pictures of all that beauty around you – rangolis, lights – the works. Do it in style with this Vishal Dadlani number playing in the background. Picturised on Salman Khan, the happy vibe of the song is all about how youngsters in India are in ‘click happy’ mode these days. More power to your selfie!

6. Silsila Ye Chahat Ka (Devdas, 2002): A stunning and lovelorn Aishwarya, decked in gorgeous finery, singing with a pretty diya in her hand, is more about lost love than your regular celebration. However, besides the grand setting, rich clothes and a diya with some great dance, the song has an undertone of sacrifice and true love – emotions that give Diwali its beauty and depth.

7. Prem Leela Ram Leela (Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, 2015):
Dance to the beats and celebratory mood of the feel good number by singer Palak Muchhal. A typical Rajshri song with an enthusiastic Salman Khan dancing to it, Prem Leela, it seems, was made for festivities. It has a ‘Ramayana on stage’ setting and it is colourful with a strong desi flavor – so much fun.  Make sure you add it to your music list in the comments section.
