4 critically-acclaimed biopics

From football, boxing to baseball, here are the big screen’s finest sport sagas. They all had a couple of things in common — impeccable performances, and critics’ thumb of approval

Paan Singh Tomar

You could call Tigmanshu Dhulia’s biopic on India’s steeplechase-expert-turned-dacoit, Paan Singh Tomar, the trend setter. This movie and its surprise box-office success convinced the powers of Bollywood to turn to sports biopics as serious commercial subjects. At the time this film was made, the masses were not aware of the story of the man who turned into a bandit after serving in the army. What works for this film is that it doesn’t please its ‘hero’ by giving a moral justification for his actions.

The pride of the yankees

This 1942 weepie, nominated for 11 Oscars, told the story of the New York Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig. “Iron Horse”, as he was popularly known, played a record 2,130 consecutive games until his physical decline from motor neurone disease — known to Americans as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”. Gary Cooper learned to throw, and bat left-handed in the lead role, while there were cameos from team-mates including Babe Ruth.

Mary Kom

Another movie that benefited greatly from the efforts of its lead was Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom. The film was a perfect playground for Priyanka Chopra to throw all her punches. Her physical change (she bulked up for the role) coupled with her restraint performance made this film a hit.

Chariots of fire

It’s remembered today for that shot of Olympians running along a beach in slow-motion — but director Hugh Hudson’s Oscar-winning sports drama is anything but an easy punchline. Recounting the true story of two early 1920s British track and field athletes (one a devout Christian, the other Jewish), the film doesn’t hinge on any single winner-take-all race despite its lead-up to the 1924 Olympics; rather, it focuses on both the men.

Mary Kom has been a huge blockbuster. The directors and the people who have worked behind the success of the film have presented the film very beautifully and perfectly and have explained the story of Mary Kom very nicely. I loved this movie. Not to forget the way Priyanka Chopra played the role of Mary Kom. She acted very nicely, it looked as if she is only Mary Kom.
