On Values Compassion Scores Over Knowledge
Pradnya Suryawanshi, Principal, AW Sindhu Vidya Bhavan, Pune

Before we teach our children true values, we have to truly value our children.  Everything around us is changing at a rapid pace. As an educationist and as adults responsible for enabling our children to take on this rapid pace, we must strive to instill in them life governing values that will help them steer through their own lives.
Nurturing is about teaching children - Not to hurt or harm someone, it's about offering your hand when somebody falls, it's about showing sensitivity to the needy. It's about living up to promises, it's about using right words and actions at the right time, and it is about building in them a sense of self-respect and selfconfidence.
An adage rightly says - "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." Thus, we need to make consistent efforts to show the little ones that we care and win their confidence before we instruct them to follow guidelines.
'Learning by doing' is the best practice. Among activities at school that helps instill compassion in children is to have them spend quality time with the less privileged. This creates  'Forces of Goodness' in society.
Green initiatives taken up by the eco club sensitises students and make them responsible towards the environment from a young age. Exposing students to noble thoughts, highest ideals, and helping them place those before themselves will result in great work by students.
If we succeed in inculcating in them the internal values of trust, honesty, service before self, our mission to create responsible citizens will be fulfilled.
