Always Believe In Yourself

Harsimran Kaur, Principal, The Gurukul, Sector 20, Panchkula, believes that educators need to teach children how to handle failures in life as a way of self improvement

Our children are taught to study hard, get good scores, obtain professional degrees, to earn for a living but no one teaches them to dream. More often than not, we teach them to look at goals, but fail to apprise them of the journey. We teach them about success, but overlook the very important art of handling failures on the way. In short, we fail to teach our youngsters the basic life skills. We fail to teach them to believe in themselves, despite all odds.
So, as educationists, we need to focus on the ‘actual’ holistic development of our students, to prepare them for life and not merely for exams.
I would advise all children to dream big and then work wholeheartedly towards realising their dreams. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, had said 'Dreams are not something that you see in sleep. Dreams are something that don’t let you sleep,' but youngsters also have to realise that no journey is ever free of obstacles. There is simply no shortcut to success. We can look around us and find many successful people in different fields, but no one reaches to the top by chance. If you read about Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery of malaria causing mosquito - the anopheles, you'll know that he dissected thousands of mosquitoes before finally discovering what he was looking for.
It’s an arduous, gruelling uphill trek for all. But yes, the view from there is certainly breathtaking. So children should aim high, dream big and then work towards their plan with steadfastness and utter belief, not deterring, not giving up despite any obstacles or any hardships and they are bound to reach their goals.
Remember, journey of a thousand miles also begins with a small step. Keep taking small steps and you will be at your destination when the time is right. Also keep in mind that when you aim for the moon, even if you miss, you stand a chance of landing among the stars. Writer Ruskin Bond had once said 'Build castles in the air but don’t forget to give them a solid foundation'.
So, in a nutshell, I would strongly advocate that we must all dream big, have complete, unfaltering faith in our abilities, work ethically, be good to others and success will surely be ours.
