Best Time To Test Vocal Chords Is At 5 Am

Antara Nandy,9, from Kolkata, says music is her best friend and she is in no hurry to start composing her own songs

You were the winner of a singing talent show on TV.  Tell us more about it...

It happened by chance. Dad and I were passing by this place where the auditions were going on. He just looked at me and asked if I wanted to give it a try. I kept thinking about it all night long.  In the morning I had made up my mind - I was going to participate. The rest as they say is history!

Since when did you start your formal training as a singer?
I started singing since I was 5. My parents tell me it was an inborn talent. They have supported me all through my journey and it's because of them that I have come this far. My dad chose to move to Kolkata (from Hyderabad), so that I could get the best training.

Tell us about your schedule...
The best time to test your vocal chords is in the wee hours of the morning. So, I get up at 5 am and start with my riyaz. After an hour of practice, I get ready for school. I go to bed quite late.

According to you, has music changed in the past decade?
A lot has changed in the last few years. No one wants to go ahead with albums (recorded singles) these days. Back in the 90s, the situation was different. Now music needs to be downloaded, the only way you can promote it is via YouTube and with times changing, people are being reluctant to click on YouTube Links. There are easier channels available for downloads music for free.

Do you like composing your own songs?
I am trying my hand on composing skills and mastering the art. But I am not looking at releasing any specific title any time soon.

Tell us about your most popular video link, 'Pinga...'
When my sister and I felt we are running out of ideas, my mother suggested that we try our hands as percussion with the tea cups that we were already doing. Watch the video here
