Eat Your Sandwich Without Messing It Up

Can you eat a sandwich gracefully? Without messing it up or without the customary stuffing slips? Well, if you can, you are God... one of your kind. For everyone else, this feature will prove to be a boon

How do you eat your sandwich? You eat it with fork and knife or in whatever way you like? That’s a question no one will ever pose to you because on one knows that there is actually some discussion happening around sandwich etiquette. For example, how many sandwiches can you have at party? Or should you eat your burger with fork and knife or with hands? We have simplified the entire discussion by creating a reckoner based on the type of sandwiches.

  • Club Sandwiches: There are three basic problems of eating a club sandwich — they are too big to fit into the mouth, its filling is rich and inconsistent, and thirdly, it’s a jaw-stretching exercise. A lot of swank mouthed people will tell you that the best way to eat a club sandwich is to unstack it and then eat its various layers using a fork and knife.  Now, that’s an utterly ridiculous tip because there is no point in fixing up a club and then dismantling it into various portions. Besides, it’s quite dumb to eat a club sandwich with fork and knife. Instead, hold the sandwich firmly (in the middle and towards the end of the sandwich) so that the fillings don’t slip out and the sandwich goes into your mouth properly. Then eat it flat.  Still, if you are not convinced about ‘not messing up your club’, use some toothpicks or skewers to keep the ingredients together.

  • Open-faced Sandwich: They are the most uncomplicated bread stuff so just bite it off; or if it has a gravy, like sunny side-up, use a fork and knife. Simple!
  • Tea time Sandwiches: The cucumber, cheese sandwich is the most popular variety of tea sandwich in India. If you have eaten them you would know that there is no way you can mess-up a tea sandwich. This is why there is no fixed set of rules that govern how a tea sandwich is eaten. Just savour them the way you want to. Obviously, don’t stuff the entire portion in your mouth in one go because the world is not slipping into some sandwich famine. If the sandwich has some form of liquid topping, it will mostly be served with a set of fork and knife. Use it wisely.
  • Sandwiches with motherload of stuffing: To eat a subway without dripping sauces, jalapenos or pickel on the tray/table/shirt is a daunting task. The best way to eat them is to cut them into smaller parts. Don’t eat them on the move, the sauces will ruin your attire.
  • Burgers: Dealing with a McD burgers was never a problem as they are easy on stuffings, but with the incoming of various international burger chains, our favourite fast food has become bulkier. They are now loaded with several layers of cheese, bun, patty, mayo, meat, lettuce, etc. And the only way to work around with them is to cut them in half, and then eat it. You can use a fork and knife if there are a lot of fluid ingredients in the burger.
