18-Year-Old Has 19,824 Pencils

Tushar Lakhanpal’s collection in enviable. From regular wooden and mechanical pencils to those made from recycled newspaper, he has them all. What’s more, he has some in 22-carat gold and studded with Swarovski crystals.

Q How did you start your collection?

I was hooked to a show called ‘OZ World’ in which a character named Henry, used to collect spoons. I wanted to start a collection but it had to be different. Slowly, I started collecting pencils. When I had 300-odd pencils, an uncle of mine saw my collection. He asked me to contact the ‘Limca Book of Records’. The difference between the record holder for the largest collection and what I had at that time wasn’t huge. I asked my parents to help me break that record. Right now, I have 19,824 pencils. I’ve even made it to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Q Any unique pencils in your collection?

I have a gold-plated pencil. Another was used by the Queen of England. There are some in the shape of spoons, others encrusted with Swarovski crystals and some scented ones as well.

Q Which is the most expensive pencil you possess?

It’s the one used by the Queen of England. I got it for £ 400.

Q Do you have a museum for your pencils?

I aspire to have one someday. I want to take care of my pencils and showcase them to the world.

Q If a youngster wants to start a collection of this kind, how should he/she go about it?

You don’t need to do anything special. Just decide what you want to collect. Ultimately, you need to admire your collection. It’s difficult to keep track of all my pencils but I make an attempt to look at them from time to time.

Tushar’s Collectibles

  • The biggest pencil in his collection is 8ft 3 in long and 29cm wide, while the smallest pencil in his possession is just 4cm long.
  • The New Delhi teen also has a gold-plated pencil.
  • The record for the largest collection of pencils was previously held by Emilio Arenas from Uruguay. Arenas had 16,260 black pencils from 72 countries.

Safety measures

  1. Pencils from Tushar’s collection are stacked in glass frames and kept in the basement of his house.
  2. The pencils are counted only once every year, or whenever Tushar vies for a record.
  3. The counting process takes a day.

Unbelievable, but true

  • Pencils can write in zero gravity, and were used on space missions by American and Russian astronauts.
  • Thomas Edison had specially made pencils that were thicker than regular pencils.
  • More than half of all pencils come from China. In 2004, the country churned out 10 billion pencils, enough to circle Earth more than 40 times.
  • The world’s largest pencil is a Castell 9000, on display at the manufacturer’s plant near Kuala Lumpur. Made of Malaysian wood and polymer, it stands at 65 feet.
