Writers On Productivity

Whether you are writing a story or preparing for exams, there is much to learn from the unique strategies that authors use to produce their best work...

Chris Cleave says he wrote his bestseller ‘Everyone Brave Is Forgiven’ in the corner of The London Library, at a 60-year-old writing desk, surrounded by stacks of books with an electrical transformer box buzzing in the background. Meena Alexander, one of India’s foremost poets, carries a notebook everywhere and may be found writing in buses, subways or even crowded cafes.

Like we said, not every successful author needs solitude or a rock solid writing desk to pen something phenomenal. It comes from the habits/routines they built for themselves.

For example:
Truman Capote liked to lie down to write,
Vladimir Nabokov preferred writing in a parked car and,
Thomas Wolfe wrote as he leaned over his refrigerator.

Alexandre Dumas, who wrote all his work on a particular shade of blue paper,
Agatha Christie munched apples in the bathtub as she imagined murder plots.

Feeling stuck? These authors used the outdoors as inspiration. Read on to know more about writers’ quirks. It may help you find your special spot to study or write!

While walking
American modernist poet Wallace Stevens liked to compose poetry on slips of paper while walking from his home to his office (which was 2.5 miles away). He said walking improved his concentration.

On horseback
We’re not kidding! Sir Walter Scott came up with some parts of his  his epic poem ‘Marmion’ while on horseback. According to a report, the descriptions of armed horsemen in the poem were influenced by Scott’s own experiences while training with the Light Horse Volunteers in 1807.

In a train
While working as an MI 5 officer, John le Carré, spent his long train rides (over 90 minutes) from Buckinghamshire to London penning his debut novel, ‘Call for the Dead’.

In a hut
George Bernard Shaw built a writing hut in the gardens of his home. The hut was built on a revolving mechanism, allowing Shaw to follow the sun throughout the day as he wrote.

Q: Tell us about a quirky habit you picked from an author that helped you study or write in the comment section! The best (and most original) ones will find a way to the print

Quite strange and interesting too! I never knew this before. Actually feel like I''ve got rid of some heavy weight, now. I read and write better when I''m in a strange position. Not always, but most of the time, I come out with better write-ups while I''m a bit uncomfortable. This article is a good boosterism.
