Elizabeth MacKintosh  (1896-1952) aka Josephine Tey
Famous for: Creating the fictional investigator Inspector Grant of Scotland Yard. 
A physical training teacher-turned-novelist, Tey began writing mysteries in the mid-1920s under her pseudonym. The ‘Inspector Alan Grant’ series featuring Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, amounted to half a dozen books, with the final one discovered and published posthumously.

Must Read: ‘The Daughter of Time’ (1951)

This book awas voted ‘the greatest mystery novel of all time’ by the British Crime Writers’ Association, in 1990. A bedridden Alan Grant decides to spend his time solving one of the most notorious crimes in British history... the disappearance of Princes Edward and Richard (brothers), who vanished after the death of their father King Edward IV, in 1483.

Helen Clark MacInnes (1907-1985)
Famous for: Being the ‘Queen of Spy Writers’, who wrote 21 novels set in World War II and the Cold War era. 

Once a librarian, MacInnes became a publishing sensation for her taut, realistic espionage thrillers. Many critics claimed that her stories were inspired from her husband’s work as a spy. 

Must read: ‘Assignment in Brittany’ (1942)


Listed by ‘The Telegraph’ as one of the 20 best spy novels of all time,  ‘Assignment...’ was MacInnes’s third novel. The story was about a British officer inserted into Nazi-occupied France to obtain vital information by impersonating an influential local. The novel was so successful that all Allied agents being sent to work with the French resistance were required to read it!


Dorothy L Sayers (1893- 1957)
Famous for: Creating the fictional character Lord Peter Wimsey,  an amateur sleuth who solved mysteries for his own amusement.

The renowned English crime writer was a student of classical and modern languages and also known for her plays, literary criticism and essays. 

Must read: ‘The Nine Tailors’ (1923) 

The ninth book to feature Lord Peter Wimsey, ‘The Nine Tailors’ was awarded the ‘Rusty Dagger award for best crime novel of the 1930s by the British Crime Writers Association in 1999. The rivetting tale begins when a rector of a local church asks Wemsey to find out how a corpse ended up in the wrong grave!

I think my favourite crime fiction writer is Sir Authur Conan Doyle, I am also a big crime fiction reader. And he is the best one i have read although I am a big fan of even Dorothy L sayers and others mentioned here. No one can match sherlock homes. Please add him in the list
