Read 'The Stalker': A Short Story

"See you at work tomorrow!" Michelle had called out as I left her house.

It was a little after 11 at night, Michelle had left her purse at the studio and had called the studio to check if anyone was still there. I had been there and therefore agreed to return her purse. I'm not really a night person. But that night there was a cool breeze and the moon was bright in the sky. I couldn't see any stars but I definitely felt at ease, till I came to Doyer's Street. There was nobody about over there. All the shops were closed and few of the streetlights were flickering. I walked singing softly to myself. I felt a strange sensation take over me, a sensation that told me I was being followed. I didn't turn to see who it was and just kept my eyes on the road and quickened my pace. I told myself its just somebody else thats taking the same route as me. But my intuition made me feel uneasy.I took a few turns and still had the same sensation of being followed. I glanced at the waist length reflecting window of the nearby shop to try and see the person behind me. But there was nobody.Thats when the most silliest of all thoughts creeped into my mind.
What if I was being followed by a ghost?
I mean it made sense. So far I hadn't really heard any footsteps but mine. There was really nobody behind me when I looked in the window. The night that had brought me calm now felt sinister. The cool breeze was no longer soothing, but something like a warning. The moon was no longer beautiful, but haunted. Every horror movie I had ever watched started flooding my mind. I tried to talk myself out of it, told myself I was just being silly and if it was a ghost why was it following me. I mean why not just attack me. " Maybe it's a friendly one!" said a voice inside my head. "Stupid notion, its definitely a man." said another voice. I took a turn at the next alley and regretted it at once. The alley was so dark that I just managed to see where I was going. Whats more, if the person behind me was a stalker, I was giving him the perfect opportunity to attack me.
I heard no distinct footsteps behind me. Yet, my intuition screamed that I was still being followed. I didn't have anything to defend myself with.I couldn't call anybody, my phone's battery had run out just as I left Michelle's house. My palms were wet with nervousness and fear. I could hear my heart beating hard. I didn't want to turn back, in case I alerted the stalker and he attacked me. More than that I was scared of confirming my own intuition. I couldn't bear the tension anymore and started running. The cold wind beating against my face and my breathing becoming slightly difficult. My house was just some fifty metres away. I strained my ears to hear the chasing footsteps which I felt I was definitely going to hear now. Thats when I heard something else. Not footsteps, but the sound of paws. I slowed down a little, and at last turned my head and saw a Labrador. It too had slowed down the same time as me. I stopped running and stared at my 'stalker' with unbelief. It stared back, it didn't look wild and fierce. It looked friendly. It had a collar round its neck, suggesting that it was lost. It hadn't been able to find its way back home and for some strange reason decided to follow me or should I say scare me into believing in ghosts.
I felt a huge smile filling my countenance. Now me and my 'stalker' walked to my house together. He had found a new home and I had found a new friend.
