New Titles On The Block

In our World Series, we will tell you about the new books by writers from around the world. Here are a few suggestions in the thriller genre that deserve an inclusion in your reading list .

Genre: Psychological thriller
In short: 'The Lost Boy' combines a gripping police procedural with a ghost story while poignantly delving into the devastating effects of grief, especially among mothers.

The Lost Boy by Camilla Lackberg

The Plot
The joy that police detective Patrik Hedstrom and his wife, Erica, a true-crime writer, feel over the recent birth of their twin sons is balanced by a recent horrific car accident in which their infant nephew was killed. In addition, Patrik ended up in the hospital at the same time Erica was giving birth. Back on the job after sick leave, Patrik and his fellow detectives investigate the murder of Mats Sverin, Fjallbacka's finance officer who was instrumental in restoring a dilapidated hotel into a ritzy spa that surely will attract high-end tourists to the town. Mats was well-liked by his colleagues and the town's residents, and doted on by his loving parents. His life recently had become complicated with the reappearance of his high school girlfriend, Nathalie Wester, and her 5-year-old son, Sam. Nathalie had fled to the area in the middle of the night, returning to the nearby remote island Graskar where she grew up. Located just outside Fjallbacka, the island was nicknamed Ghost Isle because of the legend that those who die on the island remain there in spirit. Nathalie believes in those ghosts (she talked with them when she was a child) and, now, she again finds comfort in them.

Delving into the intricacies of police work, Lackberg also turns 'The Lost Boy' into a psychological thriller that digs deep into each character's psyche. While the shadowy ghosts permeate the story, Lackberg keeps this supernatural aspect akin to those in the gothic masterpiece 'The Turn of the Screw.' Are the ghosts real or are they in the character's mind?
sidenote: Camilla Lackberg proves why she's called Sweden's 'queen of crime' in her superb seventh novel set in the coastal town of Fjallbacka.

Genre: Legal Thriller
In short: Heartwarming and ingeniously plotted.

The Twelve Dogs of Christmas by David Rosenfelt

The Plot:
Andy Carpenter is a criminal defense attorney. He rarely takes cases, having inherited a fortune from his father. But Carpenter loves dogs, so he's eager to help a woman who's known as 'Pups' because she takes care of abandoned puppies. Pups' problem? A newcomer to her neighborhood has complained to the local zoning board that she has more dogs than are allowed per household.  With his characteristically hilarious courtroom performance, Carpenter shows the absurdity of the regulation and gets her a waiver to keep the puppies. Within a few hours, the newcomer is found murdered and Pups is arrested. She was seen running from his house, and the gun that killed him is found in her basement. Carpenter believes Pups was framed, and he vows to find out how and why. But he has to hurry because Pups has terminal cancer.

Recommended because...
The familiar characters that liven up the series are present in 'The Twelve Dogs of Christmas.'Carpenter's endearing first-person narrative moves the story along with just the right mixture of humor and suspense. David Rosenfelt is known for his legal thrillers filled with wry humor.

Genre: Thriller
In short: Moves at satisfyingly addictive pace

Fractured by Catherine McKenzie

The Plot:
Tells the story of a newly popular contemporary fiction author, Julie Prentice, who is as well-known for her wildly popular first novel as she is for her stalker, a former university classmate. The fictional novel, 'The Murder Game,' may or may not be based on a real-life murder in Julie's past. When she and her family move to Cincinnati to dodge the stalker and attempt a fresh start, Julie's history looms large.

Recommended because...
'Fractured' bounces back and forth in time and between the viewpoints of Julie and her neighbor John, with whom she shares a flirtation, but the movements are so adept, they never become confusing. Instead, readers are hurled through complex and overlapping plots (murder, lying, nosy neighbors, courtroom drama) at a satisfyingly addictive pace.
