Micro Review: 'City of Girls'

Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert's third novel City of Girls released in June 2019. The story is told through an older woman's perspective who looks back on her younger days and discovers through her journey that one doesn't need to be a good girl to be a good human being.

City of Girls is set in 1940s New York City theatre world. When 19-year-old Vivian Morris miserably fails in her freshman year, she is kicked out of Vassar College. Her parents then send her to visit her eccentric Aunt Peg, who runs a disreputable theatre named the Lily Playhouse in Manhattan. Here Vivian meets a bunch of unconventional people whom she finds fascinating. While Vivian isn't keen about acting, she loves fine clothes and is also a pro in sewing.

And so, her aunt keeps her as a costumer for the theatre. But when Vivian falls in love and gets embroiled in a scandal, it changes her life forever. It takes Vivian years to realise the kind of life she wants and the courage and freedom it takes to achieve it; she also eventually finds the love of her life.

Gilbert's City of Girls is a story about one's desire, happiness and living life to the fullest.

How critics view the book:
Stephanie Merritt writes for The Guardian, "What appears to be a novel about sexual awakening turns out to be a warm and wise meditation on friendship, on the choices women make, and on the way that multifaceted relationships and sexuality are far from being modern phenomena."

Ron Charles writes for The Washington Post, "“City of Girls” is woven into the excitement of mid-20th-century New York... Fans of Jennifer Egan’s last novel, “Manhattan Beach,” will recognize the same setting and time period, though the tone here is humorous rather than noirish."

Leah Greenblatt writes for Entertainment Weekly, "Elizabeth Gilbert's 'City of Girls' takes a fizzy trip to '40s NYC".
Publishers Weekly writes, "Vivian—originally reckless and selfish, eventually thoughtful and humane—is the perfect protagonist for this novel, a page-turner with a heart complete with a potent message of fulfilment and happiness."
David Gates writes for the New York Times, "Elizabeth Gilbert’s ‘City of Girls’ delivers a love- and booze-filled romp through 1940s New York".
