Matilde's Top Books On Animals

From 'The History of the Robins' by Sarah Trimmer, published in 1786, to 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell, animal stories have always appealed to children and adults alike for their portrayal of the furry, finned and feathered creatures that share our world. Below are five of the best animal stories of all time:

Marley and Me by John Grogan A young couple adopts a yellow Labrador retriever named Marley, who isn't the angel he appears to be. Made into a movie starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as the hapless newlyweds, this book, with its inevitably poignant ending, follows thirteen years of life with a dog who can turn a house upside down in a single day with his own brand of insouciant mayhem.

If Only They Could Talk by James Herriot
A newly qualified vet accepts a job in the small town of Darrowby, in the Yorkshire moors, as an apprentice to established veterinarian Siegfried Farnon. He quickly gets used to balancing his duty with the foibles and idiosyncrasies of the farmers, most of whom don't believe that Farnon's young apprentice can be of much use.

The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
Growing up in the harsh Florida backwoods, Jody Baxter is desperate for a pet to love. But times are tough, and there is barely enough food for Jody and his parents to survive. When Jody finds an orphaned fawn and names him Flag, he has to struggle against the strictness of his mother to save the little yearling.

Lassie Come-Home by Eric Knight
Another story of animal love portrayed against a background of hardship, 'Lassie Come-Home' is the story of a Rough Collie who is sold after her owner Joe Carraclough's parents face hard times during the Great Depression. Taken to a castle in Scotland, Lassie escapes and endures a harsh trek across northern England in order to be reunited with Joe.

Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson
Told from the point of view of the protagonist without anthropomorphising the animal, this book presents an accurate description of Tarka's trials and tribulations, as well as the beautiful countryside around him. As the otter grows up, he learns to swim in deep water and to catch fish, as well as to watch out for otter hunters with their loud horns and bloodthirsty hounds.
