J.R.R Tolkien’s New Novel Hit Shelves

Attention Tolkien fans! A new book by "Lord of the Rings" author is going on sale, a century after he first conceived it.

Beren and Luthien, edited by J.R.R Tolkien's son Christopher Tolkien, is a novel that Tolkien recounted as a story in a chapter of his posthumously published The Silmarillion. Christopher also edited The Silmarillion and has worked on other books published after his father's death in 1973.

The novel contains illustrations by the Academy Award winner Alan Lee. The British artist won his Oscar in 2004 for art direction in the final movie of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, The Return of the King .

The novel Beren and Luthien has its setting in the Middle Earth world, several thousand years before the timeframe in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The story follows a romance between Beren, a human, and Luthien, an elf. It has been described as a "very personal story" that the Oxford professor conceived after returning from the Battle of the Somme. John Garth, Tolkien's biographer told the BBC that the author first started writing the story while recovering trench fever, a clinical condition caused by infection contracted while serving in World War I.

Garth said, "He'd lost two of his dearest friends on the Somme, and you can imagine he must have been inside as much of a wreck as he was physically". He even said that The Hobbit author used his writing like as a catharsis to rid himself of the horrors of the War.

Tolkien supposedly meant to write the story as a tribute to Tolkien's wife, Edith. The names Beren and Luthien are carved on the gravestone Tolkien and his wife share in Wolvercote cemetery in Oxford.

Beren and Luthien was published on June 1 by HarperCollins and seems on its to becoming an instant hit. The book can be pre-ordered on Amazon, to be available in India from July 12.
