Graphic Novels You Must Read

Sabrina by Nick Drnaso is the first graphic novel to be longlisted for the £50,000 Man Booker Prize in the award’s 50-year history. Here is a beginner’s guide to some prominent graphic novels...

MAUS By Art Spiegelman
The first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Polish Jew who survives the Holocaust, and his son, a cartoonist, coming to terms with his father’s story.

FUN HOME By Alison Bechdel
The story is set in rural Pennsylvania and explores the relationship between the author and her father. The daughter’s coming out of the closet leads to the suicide of the father, a closet homosexual himself.

PALESTINE By Joe Sacco
The book provides a compelling insight into the Palestine experience. Sacco wrote this after interviewing about 100 Palestinians and Jews.

GHOST WORLD By Daniel Clowes
The book follows the adventures of two teenage girls who grow up together and later fall apart. It inspired an eponymous movie in 2001.

PERSEPOLIS By Marjane Satrapi
The book depicts the author’s childhood up to her early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. The book was made into an animated feature film which used the same kind of illustration that Satrapi drew for the book.

BLANKETS By Craig Thompson
It is the story of a young man coming of age and finding the confidence to express his creative voice. The memoir plays out in Wisconsin winter against the backdrop of a rigorously fundamentalist Christian childhood. It explores the rivalry of two brothers growing up in the isolated country, and the budding romance of two coming-of-age lovers.
