Now read: Author Kusum Sawhney shares her favourite reads.

What I read in the morning
I am an early riser and I usually flip through the papers with a mug of hot water and lemon. First, I read the headlines to get the big picture and then go through the various stories. I tend to read the papers from cover to cover.

What I read before going to bed
At the moment I've got Anything is Possible by Elizabeth Stroud, Paul Auster's 4321 and The Hate you Give by Angie Thomas.

A book that changed me.
Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children opened up a whole new world for me, with his magical story within a story within a story and his fabulous use of new coined phrases that just seemed to fit and explain everything perfectly. The possibilities he displayed with the written word to the reader were amazing.
Another book that has stayed with me forever is Wilbur Smith's The River God. I fell in love with the character of Taita... he was so powerfully portrayed, so absolutely real that when I finished the book I was heartbroken as if he was no longer part of my real world. He was that vividly captured by the writer! And that's how characters in books should be, they should be able to draw the reader so absolutely into their own world that you forget the real and for that time the real is only the book!

Book on my bedside...
At the moment my reading has shifted from the real issue-based type of fiction to the dramatic and imaginatively magical and mythological. George RR Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire is profoundly inspirational. It is an astoundingly creative space that is influencing my own style of writing. The fictional languages, the narrative styles, the vivid characterisations and mythological references and the animalistic and primitive descriptions... all make this book series a fabulously rich world.

A book that inspired me

I love books by Jane Austen and her world of gentrified manners. I remember the first time I read the opening lines of Pride and Prejudice: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife". How marvellously apt was she... Austen knew her world intimately and wielded power over that world through her pen. And that is what a writer is always striving for. TNN

A BOOK THAT INSPIRED ME: Often I feel low! Every time I cannot find my mentors, but my book You Can Win by Shiv Khera will be with me. The way he explained each and every concepts are truly a booster. Be it his way of writing or the short stories which comes in-between every single detail is amazing. This is also the book which changed my bad thoughts into good ones and I pick it up before my bed. When I touch it I get some energy. It''s really awesome and I also wish everyone should read it!

A BOOK THAT I CRY: Ofcourse Harry Potter series. With no doubt Harry Potter series are the favourite series for many souls. It takes us straight to Hogwarts and we get mingled with them all. We become one among the Griffindor! But when our loved ones die, how will you feel 😢? Their death made me cry!!! Be it Snape, Dobby, Dumbeldore, Harry''s Parents...... The list just goes on! But I smiled to myself so many times because of J.K.Rowling! Awesome book!

A BOOK THAT CHANGED ME: There was a time when I required help to look at life in a better way. That''s when I read the book ''License to Live'' by Priya Kumar. It greatly reformed my outlook. It teaches you to take responsibility for your actions, leave your past and live in the present to create the ideal future for yourself. Its a book I re-read a lot so that I remember the lessons that the author learnt when she went on a life-changing seminar to find meaning in her mundane life.

A BOOK THAT I CRY: The one book which I distinctly remember crying while reading: ''Alleigant'' from the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. When Tris dies after surviving the death serume yet dying by being shot is really emotional as she was one of the best main characters ever and I could relate to her. More than when she dies, when Tobias writes about Tris''s death, it destroys all the control you had on yourself and makes you cry at the loss of the one of the bravest people you met.

A book I wish everyone reads - Well, of course The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Potentially educational, funny at times, a little eerie as it is narrated by death and heart - breaking when you see Rudy die. I use the word see because you pragmatically live inside the book when you read it. I think Liesel Meminger'' s inspiring story should find a place in everyone''s shelf, whether child or adult.

Asmita D.A.V Public School, Thane

A book that inspired me- Wonder by R.J.Palacio is a truly inspiring book that focused more on that famous thought by Shakespeare that All that glitters is not gold. It touches the heart in a different way. It taught me that appearances don''t matter. What really matters is that you have an inner beauty that is truly your own because everyone else is already taken. This book is really a wonder for children as well as adults. We can never stop learning, right ?

What I read before going to bed- Well, whatever I can get my hands on, but what really sticks in my mind are those books which I don''t like to read but love to read.

A book that changed me- Famous Moral stories. It may seem a little awkward but it was the first story book I ever read in my first grade. It opened the beautiful world of words and pages for me. I''ve still got it as it reminds me that it was I who didn''t have the patience to read long books and now here I am who simply lives in them.

anushka sharma jain bharati mrigavati vidyalaya

P.S Geethanjali Nalanda Vidya Niketan, Vijayawada

A BOOK THAT I CRY :Well,A book that made me cry is the Oath of the Vayuputras, the third book of the Shiva trilogy written by Amish Tripathi.I really love the way Amish has potrayed Sati in the book. I considered Sati to be my ideal and wanted to become like her when I grow up - honest, righteous and courageous. Sati was very close to my heart and Hence, I broke into tears as soon as I read how Sati was killed.

R.Abirami Sri Sankara Global Academy

A book that I read before going to bed: Harry Potter and the sorcerer''s stone. Every night when I read this book, it gives me a comforting thought: Anything magical can happen if you believe in it! This book is a must read because it teaches you the value of friends and having hope even in deepest times of despair.

Devika Singh DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL GURGAON SEC45 D

A book that changed me.. The Kite Runner This masterpiece written by Khaled Hosseini changed my way of judging people by their actions. You go through a change in your feelings for the central character, Amir as you progress through the book. He carries the burden of his wrong deeds as a tween into adulthood and the struggle his soul goes through to make amends is heartbreaking. I now firmly believe in the power of second chances, forgiveness and pure devotion to a person you love.

Devika Singh DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL GURGAON SEC45 D

A book I read before going to bed... Harry Potter and the Philosopher''s Stone. When you re -read the very first book in this phenomenal series you, quite honestly, feel a bit stupid because the signs to the end of the plot were always there. However tiresome and unsatisfactory your day, your week or even your month was, you know this- That Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home!

A book that inspired me- Though I don''t admire reading many motivational books but the that I read for random ''women who dared'' inspired me a lot. Stories of those determined and laborious women instilled an urge to do something different in me. A book that I suggest you to read- Out of several books I have read yet, the one I will suggest you to read for sure is ''When they were children'' . It is a perfect blend of inspiration, learning and biographical stories. Must read!!

A BOOK THAT I WISH EVERYONE READS would definitely be The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. It takes the reader through a wonderful journey in which he/she is acquainted with the immense beauty of life that he/she had remained ignorant of for quite a long time. Although, as children, we don''t have too many problems or tensions in our life that cause too much of serious stress on us, the manner in which the book is written gives us a peaceful feeling and soothes our mind as it dances to tranquility.
