2017 saw the release of some wonderful books and the whole world felt the impact of some very hardcore books. Every genre saw a great boost in content, new stories, and ideas. Some of them went on to win numerous awards and some even broke headlines for unexpectedly winning a major book award! Here is the list of some award-winning books of 2017 that you must read without further ado!


“My Life as a Bench” by Jaq Hazell
A book with a very unique story line where the teenage protagonist Ren has died aged seventeen and yet her consciousness lives on, inhabiting her memorial bench by the River Thames in London. Hazell’s “My Life as a Bench” won the Rubery Book Award 2017.

“Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders

George Saunders is a well-known short story writer but his novel “Lincoln in the Bardo” was his first full-fledged novel, he received the Man Booker Prize 2017 for it. Surrounded by multiple struggles already, the death of son William Lincoln leaves President Abraham Lincoln grief-stricken. The novel takes us into Saunders’ creative world, into a brilliant narrative.


"Far from the Tree" by Robin Benway
“Far from the Tree” won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. It is a beautiful story that develops on a bond shared by three people -- Maya, Grace and Joaquin, who befriend each other while searching for their biological mothers. Robin Benway’s masterpiece will make one contemplate and question their take on identity and understanding of relationships.

"The Power" by Naomi Alderman

“The Power”, winner of the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction 2017, is a dedication to Atwood by Alderman. The conventional world turns upside down when the female characters gain extraordinary and unbeatable physical power. Just like the title, the novel is a powerful provocative fictional work by Alderman.

"The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead

Colson Whitehead’s sixth novel “The Underground Railroad” became critically acclaimed after winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2017. Whitehead’s splendid abstraction is evident in his portrayal of the black slaves through Cora who is singled out amongst her own people. This tale marks the journey of the brave protagonist whose undefeated will is her only escape from the terror of her life.

"Shaken" by Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow’s “Shaken” takes us into the author's sojourn through a tough point in his life. Life’s injustice full of disappointment, criticism and scrutiny -- all made him realize the reality. The book covers his growth from a no man to a person who finally finds his path through scriptures, people’s help and his faith in the almighty. The book was honored as “Christian Book of the Year 2017.”

"Sing, Unburied, Sing" by Jesmyn Ward
Jesmyn Ward’s “Sing, Unburied, Sing” is her finest work which made the book a National Book Award Winner 2107 in the Fiction category. A lot of things are simultaneously happening in this great tale which takes you on the journey to Mississippi where a family struggles with life, grief and love. Ward’s alluring language and engaging theme is the essential soul of the novel.

"Behold the Dreamers" by Imbolo Mbue
Imbolo Mbue won the Pen/ Faulkner award for fiction 2017 for her debut novel” Behold the Dreamers”. Jende Jonga, the protagonist is an immigrant from Cameroon who comes to New York in search of a better life. The novel involves compelling themes like marriage, race and class. Situated in New York, it revolves around the lives of two families who are facing major financial crisis in 2008.

“A Horse Walks Into a Bar” by David Grossman

“A Horse Walks into a Bar” is a book with a very unique and interesting plot by an Israeli author David Grossman. The book deals with the crisis faced by a standup comedian when he goes on the stage to give his usual performance. The book was also translated into English by Jessica Cohen and won the 2017 Man Booker International Prize.


“La Rose” by Louise Erdrich
In this literary brilliance, Louise Erdrich weaves a spectacular narrative with emotionally charged subjects. The lead character, La Rose’s father kills his friend accidently, and the novel takes a different course from this point leading to the development of the novel. Louise Erdrich accepted the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in 2017.

“Evicted” by Matthew Desmond
Matthew Desmond’s heart wrenching tale “Evicted” builds upon the ubiquitous theme of poverty and economic exploitation. Story about a single mother trying to raise her children in the doomed scenario of her life in the America. Desmond received the Pulitzer Prize in the General Nonfiction category for his masterwork.


“Girl in the Blue Coat” by Monica Hesse
The Edgar Award winner for Best Young Adult Mystery, “Girl in the Blue Coat” is a compelling novel with an unconventional female protagonist Hanneke, who finds her own way to earn her living, concealing the reality from her parents. Her illegal work becomes her escape, making her a rebel. Set against the backdrop of war time, Monica Hesse’s novel stands out for its realistic approach, powerful plot and majestic writing.
