Asmita Recommends Must-Read Books

New books come and go, but few leave a permanent mark in our minds. Here are 10 such books which are amazing to the last degree ( It’s not just my opinion, you will also think so once you’ve read them).

1. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling Okay, I had to include the word ‘series’ there, because all the books are fabulous. That probably makes it 8 books but let’s consider it as one. There may be a few mistakes but overall it’s a must-read. Appropriate for young and old readers, Harry Potter gives a brilliant message of true friendship, tolerance, goodness, sacrifice etc. It also gives an insight of a student’s life and introduces characters which are good and bad. Hogwarts is imagined beautifully and the reader’s interest never dims.

2. The Fault in our Stars by John Green An award-winning book, it is very sad and full of reality. Augustus Waters was an extraordinary character but his death gave the story a new form. Written in simple language, it also contains awesome quotes. It also shows the struggle of cancer patients and is really a heart-warming tale of Hazel, Augustus and Peter Van Houten. After reading this book, I just wish that I don’t have Cancer. Though, the world is not a wish-granting factory.

3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins It was an awesome book even though the casualties are a little high. Katniss Everdeen is an inspiring character. It’s a little violent and jarring and action-packed. The plot revolves around the Capitol and its 12 Districts. It’s the best Dystopian novel I have ever read.

4. Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods by Rick Riordan If you want an interesting guide of Greek Mythology, you must read this. It also has occasional jokes from Percy and Rick Riordan makes it sound as though the Gods live in the modern world. Want to know how Zeus became top- God? Read this. How many times Kronos ate each of his kids ? Read this.

5. Sherlock Holmes: Complete collection by Arthur Conan Doyle Now that’s not a series exactly. You can get it as a single book. The Holmes-Watson pair appears in almost all of the stories, but in a few ( like the Lion’s Mane) Watson does not appear. Though, I must say that if you read this, then read the unabridged edition because most of the essence is destroyed in the abridged editions. You’ll love it.

6. Divergent by Veronica Roth It’s actually a series, but I included it here because it is amazing. I have not read it exactly but I will read it because I’ve heard a little bit about it so I know it is amazing.

7. Heroes of Olympus: The House of Hades by Rick Riordan I could have written the Heroes of Olympus series but I think this the best book in the series. Mainly focuses on Hazel and The House of Hades which is a temple in Epirus, Greece. I think the main moral is, ‘Good prevails over evil’ or something like that. It is written in lucid language but is a must-read.

8. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald A beautiful classic and also a short-read, it presents us wonderful characters like Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. There are 2 deaths in this book and Jay Gatsby is truly the Great Gatsby. Why ? You have to read and see.

9. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak A story taking place in the time of Nazi Germany, it follows the adventures of Liesel Meminger, The Book Thief. It was really, really sad to see Hans Hubermann die. The novel is narrated by Death which makes the story more interesting.

10. Wonder by R.J.Palacio Don’t judge by looks. This heart- warming tale of August Pullman shows you that people like him are also part of the society and can perform better than us.
