7 Fantasy Series You Should Read

Despite popular belief, fantasy is a genre for all ages. While many books are written keeping children in mind, most appeal to adults as well. Some, like the popular "A Song of Ice and Fire" series are for adults and act as a magical mirror to our world showing us the flaws of governments and people through a different setting. The detailed worlds of such books can be more familiar to us than our own and become a refuge one can retreat to whenever we want to escape from reality. Here are some high fantasy epics like "A Song of Ice and Fire" we can read while we wait for George R.R. Martin to write the last two.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King
This series by Stephen King mixes many genres in a world so creative that the readers will be riveted as they try to process it all. The stories follow Roland Deschain, a member of a fallen knightly order known as gunslingers, as he hunts "the man in black" across a destroyed world. The series reads like an adventure but has a lot of thought-provoking lines in it. The series has several thick books to get lost in.

The Braided Path Trilogy by Chris Wooding
This interesting fantasy is set in a country broken by illness with a ruler who is out of options and freedom fighters. The magic Weavers try to kill anyone born with magical power but when the Empress' child is born with magic, a revolution gains power. The series has a lot of political intrigues.

Study series by Maria V. Snyder

The Study series is set in a world with two countries, one with magic and one where magic is illegal. The protagonist is a woman with a dark past called Yelena who is due to be executed at the beginning of the first book, "Poison Study". However, she is given the job of being the poison taster to the ruler of the country and thus dragged into the politics between the countries. The story has magic, adventure, and a lot of action. The books aren't too thick and can be read quickly.

The Dark Star Trilogy by Marlon James

Though only the first book, named 'Black Leopard, Red Wolf', of the series is published, the style of storytelling in this fascinating African-inspired world is very interesting. The main event is the death of a boy and the first book is narrated by the Tracker while the other two books would be narrated by the Moon Witch, and the Boy, each telling their stories in the books. In the end, the readers would have to figure out whose perspective contains the truth.

Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson
This epic fantasy series is set in the Final Empire in a world called Scadrial. There are two trilogies whose events are set in different times and there are lots of books to keep oneself busy. Set in the feudal medieval world, the series starts with a couple of characters who are part of a rebellion. Though it relies on many fantasy tropes, the series still feels fresh and the story is interesting.

The Daevabad Trilogy by S.A Chakraborty

Set in a world where magical creatures called Djinni and Marids exist, this series brings out the magic of central Asia. The Map of the world inside is like ours, though the rules of magic aren't. This series follows multiple perspectives including that of a djinni, a con-woman, and an exiled prince. The books have a lot of politics, battle and, of course, magic.

Game World trilogy by Samit Basu
This trilogy is a funny take on fantasy tropes with two opposite heroes and a plot with lots of surprises. This series, which is both engaging and humorous, is best for fantasy fans as it has a lot of references to mythology and other fantasy novels.
