5 Classic Dr Seuss Books

Dr. Seuss, aka Theodor Seuss Geisel, is a household name thanks to his extraordinary body of work. He wrote 44 books for children, and each one is just as amusing and lyrical as the rest.  Entirely imaginative, easy-to-read and even easier to laugh at, Dr. Seuss' writings are a must-read for anyone who loves rhymes and wonderfully imagery. So on the occasion of what would have been his 108th birthday, here are his 5 most classic books.
P.S. Most of his prose has subliminal meaning--often pointing fingers at the government and human error--which makes it interesting for adults as well!

Horton Hears a Who!: Horton the Elephant is undoubtedly one of his most lovable characters ever! Penned in 1957, the book tells the story of this adorable trunked beast who speaks to a small speck of dirt. Of course, the speck is no ordinary speck. It is actually a tiny planet, which houses the city of 'Who-ville' that's inhabited by microscopic inhabitants known as Whos. They ask him to protect them from harm and he immediately agrees to do so with the single, repeated proclamation, "a person's a person, no matter how small." In return for this selfless act, he gets ridiculed and quite nearly killed for believing in something no one else can see or hear!

How The Grinch Stole Christmas: Few Dr. Seuss stories have been quite as widely read as this one. It is his beautiful depiction of Christmas and generosity through this otherwise hilarious story that has made it a Christmas classic. The Grinch is a bitter creature who has a heart that is 'two sizes too small.' Bothered by and envious of all the Christmas festivities and joy emanating from Whoville, he embarks on his endeavor to "prevent Christmas from coming." In the end, he learns that despite the success of his plan, he cannot prevent the spirit of Christmas from entering and his heart eventually grows.

The Cat In The Hat: There's a reason that this book went on to become one of the greatest children's movies of all time--and it's not just because of Mike Myers' portrayal of the Cat. The main character, the Cat, brings with him the most eccentric, amusing chaos to the house of two young children on a rainy day.  The events that ensue will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. Between wacky tricks and general craziness, Seuss tells his most entertaining tale ever!

The Lorax: Penned in 1971, this book is ranked among the best by most critics as well. Chronicling environmental degradation, the good Dr. deals with a sensitive and deep topic with characteristic humor and unforgettable characters. The Lorax is a "mossy, bossy man-like creature," who speaks for the trees against the awfully greedy Once-ler! Older readers easily identify various characters in the book as metaphors for our compulsively consumerist society. If the Once-ler is a human-like form of industries, the Lorax is none other than the environment. And a bonus: 'The Lorax' film is releasing this weekend too!

The Sneetches And Other Stories: Growing up, this was probably my personal favorite among all the Seuss stories. Once again portraying something as heavy and unchildlike as discrimination, the flamboyantly creative author invented this odd race of yellow creatures who love the beach. Some Sneetches have stars on their bellies while others do not, and the ones who don't are shunned from society. Then, a "fix-it-up chappie" appears who offers the Sneetches without stars a chance to acquire them through his 'star-on' machine. When the old starry sneetches get upset with this, he offers them the use of his 'star-off' machine. In the end, all the Sneetches learn that neither are superior and they all come to live together happily ever after.
