TOIStudents Tell Us Why They Doodle

Researchers Have Found That Those Who Doodle Have 30 Per cent More Retaining & Recalling Power

Given a pen or pencil, we start scribbling on anything that’s near us. Whether its a favorite quote, a character, random lines, or just plain designs, scribbling or doodling as it is popular now, has become quite common. Be it homework or studies, doodling is perhaps the best thing you can do to relax your mind than gazing at your smartphones. Researchers have found that those who doodle have 30 percent more retaining and recalling power than those who don’t.

TOIStudent Tell Us Why They Doodle?

I was in the psychology class, and we were studying about ‘concept of self’ and I took a plain sheet out of my practical file and started doodling. I drew eyes to ‘see’ within, to get an awareness. A semi- circle, to put a lot of things together and make sense of it. And the hand, waving to myself, saying ‘you need regulation’. Doodling the things I study in class, makes me learn better as I am able to relate to it easily.

Doodling has become a form of expressing creativity for lots of people. Although adults, mostly teachers, may look at it derisively, for many, doodling is a kind of expression that, even though does not require technical art skills, has become one of the most fun ways to avoid boredom and occupy oneself. I doodle mostly when occupied in an otherwise uninteresting or easy task, doodling flowers, unicorns, or stick figures. If not a form of expression, it becomes a way to de-stress, providing something to do when nervous or anxious.
Ishrita Bagchi, Class 12, Ryan International School, Gurgaon

I am just another person who has her mind at a hundred places at the same time. Doodling comes naturally to people like us. I think it’s a great way to reflect our inner creativity. Just putting stuff on paper has something very honest about it. At times, I surprise myself with what I draw because when I think I’m just stroking my pen randomly somehow subconsciously I turn it into something more.  Doodling puts me at ease and soothes my mind.

Tips from a Doodler: How to Doodle

Kirthi Jayakumar, 25, a storyteller, writer, and artist says:

Doodling has no rules. You just have to listen to your mind because it will help you relax.

- Use a good quality pen - microtips and gel pens work the best.
- Avoid thick ink unless you have art paper.
- Use any kind of paper, but if you’re using a thick pen (marker / felt tip), use card paper.
- There are no mistakes - only new designs!
