VLC Android App Upgraded With Android N Support

VLC, probably the most popular media player app out there, has been updated on Android. The update brings support for Google's Android N operating system, which is currently available only as a preview on select devices.

The app update fixes a previous issue VLC had with Android N's runtime permissions. In addition, the app introduces a few more features. There's now a pop-up video player, along with a customizable window to complement Android N's desktop mode.

Users can now also access, browse and play content from local networks. This means that network shared files via DLNA, UPnP, SFTP, FTP and NFS can be now played in VLC. The app can find subtitles for files, and even lets users decide the layout in which they want the subtitles to be displayed.

The app also lets users create playlists of videos through the advanced options menu.
VLC media player is a portable, cross-platform media player that is available for both desktop operating systems and mobile platforms, such as Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone, Android, iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. It is compatible with many audio and video compression methods and file formats, including DVD-Video, video CD and streaming protocols. Users can also stream media over computer networks and transcode multimedia files.

For now, Android N's preview is only available on Google's Nexus 6, 6P and 5X smartphones, along with Nexus 9. The latest Android version has features like virtual reality integration, an upgraded Google keyboard, interactive notifications, redesigned settings window, easier multitasking and split screen mode.

This year, Google conducted an online poll to decide the name of Android N. The #NameAndroidN website allowed anyone to participate and suggest a name for Android N, till 12.29 pm June 9, IST. Amid this, an Indian dessert Neyyappam also came up as a suggestion for the new Android N. A lot was said about it on social media and it also garnered support from Kerala Tourism Department. Interestingly, Google ruled out the possibility of naming Android N as Nutella. However, we'll have to wait to find out what Android N is actually named.
