Why Do We Blame The Victim?

Be it the case of Nirbhaya or the recent mass molestation of women in Bangalore that took place on New Year’s Eve, whenever a lady is treated in the manner which is unacceptable, not just politicians but the entire feudal set of people start suggesting that the ‘victim’ should have been careful, and that our mother, sister, girlfriend, wife, or female colleague can avoid ‘such molestation’ if they dress safe (subjected to approval) and do not venture out late.

 Abu Azmi started
Soon after the Bangalore incident, Samajwadi Party Mumbai unit Chief Abu Azmi said, "The women are pride of our family and country. Therefore, it is our duty to safeguard them. If we allow them to follow western culture blindly, then I am sorry to say that people will misbehave with them in such ways." Azmi is said to have commented that women were like "sugar" and men were like ants, and compared women with petrol. "If there is petrol, there will be fire. If there is sugar, ants will come," he reportedly commented.

Karnataka Home Minister continued
Singing the same tune, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said to have blamed the "western ways" of the youngsters for the molestation. He said it was not uncommon for crowds of women to be molested in the city on Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Things You Need To Know About Victim Blaming

  • It is a natural psychological reaction to crime.
  • Mostly, it's done by people who like the believe that we live in a just world, or that the victims deserved what they got.
  • Not everyone who blames the victim intends to say that the victim was at fault.  It could just be a way to say that you need to be more careful. For example, if you drop you mobile phone, your parents might tell you that you should keep it properly. Even though they might sound like they are blaming, they are not.

"They try to copy the West, not only in their mindset but even in their dressing. So some disturbance; some girls are harassed; these kind of things do happen,"
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara

“I think the biggest factor that promotes victim-blaming is something called the just world hypothesis,”

“It’s this idea that people deserve what happens to them. There’s just a really strong need to believe that we all deserve our outcomes and consequences.”
Sherry Hamby, professor of psychology at the University of the South and founding editor of the APA’s Psychology of Violence journal

"Parameshwara and Azmi have made extremely misogynistic statements on this incident which has caused national and international outrage,"
"Parameshwara, despite being the Home Minister of Karnataka, casually referred to the molestation incidents as ones which happen usually, thereby implying that these are not big incidents,"
"Azmi crossed all boundaries by saying that women walking alone at night or not covering their bodies fully and ensuring a 'burka' or 'pallu' invite sexual violence."

Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

Our country is democratic. Every woman has the right wear what they wish to. And to what Mr. Abu Azmi said I would like to suggest him that it would be better if you teach some manners to your boys rather than deciding what your girls should wear.

Gorvi Sajnani BHATNAGAR INT. SCH. A1 PASCHIM VHR

Well,it is not at all right to blame the victim. It is actually the mentality of the people which needs to be changed.Talking about nirbhaya case, the victim Jyoti was not wearing a western outfit then why was she raped? If the dressing manner of the women even changed, the mentality of people won''t and still molestations would happen. If boys can party all night, why can''t there be such security and loyal police crew which can make it easier and securer for girls to party even at night?

SHAKSHI SOMERVILLE SCHOOL (SR.)(NOIDA)

Blaming the victim, I would say won''t be entirely correct. People like Abu who have this kind of mindset are the one who doesn''t allow girls to live safely in this world. India is a democratic country and every citizen has a right to wear what she wants and no one is to comment or object her otherwise I am afraid our country won''t be able to progress.

SNEHA - R Kulapati munshi bhavan's vidhya mandir

Instead blaming the victim ,people have to try and change the brutish mentality of the criminals who are completely inhumane and these crimes can happen even to those women who are dressed properly ,as it was in the case of Jyothi .These brutal crimes would never have happened if there was enough sense of responsibility in the minds of that humongous crowd of police officers ,who were deployed there during the incident.

Pragadeesh Rj Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School - Puducherry

In our democratic nation.everybody has equal rights.women have to give the equality in this nation.blaming all the victim is not all right.Instead of blaming the victim people can try to change the mentality of themselves.

Anirudddh Pandey ASP Public School, Navi Mumbai

India is a democractic country.Everyone one has there own views. It is not right to blame "Victim"if some unacceptable incident happen. It is not a matter of dress but it is matter of our thinking. It is women right how they dress. In our country girls can be safe but due to the some ill-mannered people women are in the fear.Respect Girl otherwise they not give you even chance to speak.

Girls are still not allowed to go out in night. The reason is, Crimes that are taking place. In solution government has provided helpline numbers to girls but unfortunately cases of rapes still take place. So instead of providing these helpline numbers, why doesn''t classes of self-defense and karate is being given to girls in schools and collage so that girls can be depended on themselves instead of those helpline numbers

Emima Thangapandi PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Instead of taking actions against criminals the government blames the victim. It is really shameful that this all happened in the presence of the police. The Indian government has really a wrong mindset about this. The mindset of the men should be changed not the dress of girls. Its just an excuse of blaming the dress. How can anybody say women to not to go for partying at night, especially the CM.Is India fully safe for women? Is there a gender equality?

khaja Nomaan Ahmed Nandini High School

our country is democratic country it has big name on equality unity etc,.... every woman has right to what they want to do in this country. i agree what mr abu azmi has said womans "The women are pride of our family and country. Therefore, it is our duty to safeguard them. If we allow them to follow western culture blindly, then I am sorry to say that people will misbehave with them in such ways." so i conclude that it is not right to blame the woman victim.

Sneha Sehrawat J.M. INTERNATIONAL SCH00L

I totally agree with HAYA NAVED. Women have the right to wear things they wish to.

Revathy MAHATHMA GANDHI MEMORIAL MODEL SCHOOL

I agree with Shiksha Nath. Now also girls are not allowed to go out in night. They should be protected.

Srividya AIR FORCE SCHOOLYEL

How shameful is that to blame the victim . Men and women should not be differentiated. There should be no restrictions for women to go to a party and wearing a western dress in modern society is just so common.

Srividya AIR FORCE SCHOOLYEL

But in some cases even women should have a sense of dressing. In these days women are losing their will power and strength to fight against the crime. They can definitely be violent. In worse situations they can defend themselves

Srividya AIR FORCE SCHOOLYEL

The blame should be on the government for not taking appropriate measures. There is no police checks at night. A very strong action should be taken and the punishment for criminals must be enormous so that it is not repeated

Srividya AIR FORCE SCHOOLYEL

Why should a women wear dresses approved by other people. That is so disgusting. Why are the rights taken away. Women''s wish. Women''s choice.

It''s all about the mindset. AndI such statements from ministers is shameful. If this is the thinking of our leaders , what can we expect our country to grow ? All of us need yo, grow intellectually. That is what will make us grow and succeed.

SARGUN ST.JOSEPH'S SR.SEC. SCHOOL

As our country has a right of freedom then why there is a statement of Azim to wear ''burka'' or things like that. He should tell boys to learn some manners and respect us, because women is one who brings you in this world. NOT TO MOLEST THEM

SARGUN ST.JOSEPH'S SR.SEC. SCHOOL

And by wearing pallu are half of the body is not covered then you think such things *STOP*.

RIYA MITTAL Convent of Jesus and Mary

Women should be allowed to wear what they want to.They should be instead taught how to attack or defend. If they are suppressed from birth, this is what''s going to happen.Blaming the victim is entirely wrong but women should also be strong enough to defend themselves.

Huzaifa Ansari ST.ANTHONYS SCHL

Instead of telling the girls to come home early, the parents should tell their boys to come home early then only India will be safe.

Blaming the victim is not the right thing to do. Instead, we should try and avoid such kind of activities by catching the criminals. The criminals are the ones to be blamed.

Emima Thangapandi PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

The problem with the politicians is that, they were got up in a family were girls were not allowed to choose their own dress, even if men says that they have ''given'' the rights to women. Everybody should keep in mind that rights are not given by anyone. And now when parents like the western mindset, Some people have a bad mindset.THUS, the people as well as the people are blaming the victim.

Harini MS NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

Blaming victims is like blaming the fire for burning our food. It''s just pointless. Victims were just leading their lives. They have no hand in anything that may happen to them.

The pscycology of Indian people is so backward that we should be ashamed of our country people thinking. People use to say "Ladki ko hamesha ushki hadd mai rehna chahiye" why people don''t say to boys to be in there limits. Why always girl has to remember her limits why not boys. Why always there is question on girls dressup why not boyz?

They just want to blame the girls . As they are boys ,they blame it on the girls .They can''t change their mentality even a little. They and even we too need to understand that there were Adam and Eve. There cannot be either without another. So they and we should really stop blaming the girls even when the culprits are in front of them.

Afsha Saiyed PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

Girls wear what they want for for their happiness, they don''t invite boys to come and harasse them .our country is progressing so much but in this case we are very poor .so sad to hear even in 21st century people think like this .Many a times it is observed that boys with their friend stand on the road and comment on girls and people stay quiet watching. If in the same case if girls stand on the roads and comment on boys the same people will not step back to say the girls characterless.

Harpreet Kaur udai Universal Academy

India is a democratic country every one has same and equal rights if we say that girls should not go out after 9pm at night why wht will be the reason..... Don''t stop girls to go at night teach boys how to behave with girls teach them to give respect and take care of girls when they see something wrong happening.......

Rahul Yadav GURUNANAK MISSION-ANDHERI-E

something which people need to understand is to boycott such people who pass on such statements, we cant rely on media to block them which they will not as it gets more TRP which matters for business. People criticise the victim to get the attention and when we react to them they get it, Knowingly or unknowingly we are helping them.

ayush agarwal SETH JUGGILAL PODDAR ACADEMY (ICSE) MALAD-E

Our country is the greatest democracy.NO one has the right to stop us from wearing what we want to.And it is the fault of thinking and not of dressing sense.

Girls have there own independence and most probably they can manage everything and to the girls only one suggestion we are independent and we can prove others wrong.

kruti marthak Ryan International School

It is not right to blame the victim (either the victim is a boy or girl). Each one of us has the right to wear what we want to.If it is the victims fault then what about fashion, each one of us want to wear something fashionable.Either we should teach boys not touch girls.

Priyanka choudhary Bhavan Vidyalaya Panchkula

It would be better if we teach our boys some values. The orthodox thinking of these people is something that makes the girls feel insecure. the girls from the very beginning are restricted to a list of things. If the boys are taught good values instead of being told that they are strong and should not act like girls. It would be better if we teach our boys to be humans and not animals.

Neelavani Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

India is a freedom country ...and women has all rights to to wear what they want ...but men should mind there eyes...

Neelavani Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

If men can go out in late ...why can''t women...they to are strong..they to have power ...until they get saftey in society

Palaash Agarwal DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL ROHINI

There is no motive that says that women should be careful. The men are the ones whose mindset has to be changed, because they are the ones guilty. And, to avoid such incidents we can also hold workshops. The men should undergo a very painful experience which can change their life and thinking forever, which could be a punishment.

AADYA NAIR DDMS P.OBUL REDDY PUBLIC SCHOOL

When we come across cases like this in our life instead of blaming the poor helpless victims we should try to change the thought of our society on women(who are the common victims). A women is not only a body, but it is a Heart which can hear the pains of others, a Brain which thinks in right way and a Soul which tries its best to help others..
