Upasana Behera Says Yes To Consumer Studies. Do You?

To build consumer awareness, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan has urged inclusion of a small module on consumer studies in the school and college syllabus to encourage involvement of students in the consumer movement. Your take?

Having a small module on consumer studies in school and college syllabi will be helpful for students as they’ll develop knowledge and values and also get an understanding of how consumer-decision making happens. They will also learn about customer relations and finances which will be helpful in future.

Instead of introducing a new subject, the government should restructure the existing ones. Awareness about consumer movement can be created by redoing the content and giving relevant, yet up-to-date, information. It’s better to discard outdated content than introduce a new subject.
Adhiraaj Roy, class IX, DPS Vasant Kunj, Delhi

Merely including a small module in the syllabus does not make sense. Instead, the consumer movement concept should be introduced through workshops and forums. They can later be followed up as a club activity, so that students will get more involved in it. Practical knowledge of such concepts will help them become more aware as consumers.

Today’s education system may be good to score marks, but fails to retain the knowledge once students have completed their examinations. This leads to young minds being stifled at an age when they should be asking questions, learning and gaining knowledge, and developing a thirst for more knowledge. Whereas consumer studies concentrates developing knowledge , skills and attitudes in learners to enable them to become responsible.

Taking this step will be beneficial. Students can be acquainted with knowledge regarding consumer decisions. Schools can conduct practicals, activities regarding this topic. Blogs and forums can also be created to spread knowledge.

Indeed consumer studies would help a lot in making consumer related decisions. This would actually create incentives for the consumers to get to know their rights as well as their wants. It would be more effective if the students would be given practical based examples like workshops.

Having a small concept of consumer studies can be really helpful for students in their future. They can gain knowledge and can grow up the ability of learning family finance and economic influences. As a result they can overcome from day-to-day rising consumer issues.

it is a good idea to include a module on consumer awareness in the syllabus but it is not enough, awareness can be created through different clubs, workshops and consumer awareness drives also this will help in students getting practical knowledge on the subject.

Students don''t want another book adding to their syllabus. No one would even bother to read it unless they start testing thee students on the content of the module. Even the test would make them mug up the content. What to do as a consumer is more of a practical thing. The government should rather advertise about consumer awareness. Students watch T.V. more than they read books.
