Should There Be A Dress Code For Informal Events?

IIT-Delhi girls have been directed to wear ‘full covered, decent dresses’ for events. Should such a notice have been issued in the first place? Is a dress code necessary for informal events? Was the notice discriminatory?

Backward mindset

Absolutely uncalled for! How can IIT- Delhi publish such a sexist notice? This is downright discriminatory because, not only does it hinder the freedom of students to wear clothes of their choice but also indicates the backward and over protective mindset of our society towards women even in today’s age.

Encourages gender bias

Such notices should  not be issued. It points to discrimination against the girls as it was an informal event. They should have the freedom to choose what they want to wear. Institutes are knowledge hubs where there should be discipline. Imposing this notice encourages gender bias and restricts freedom.

liberty & equality

Be it any college abroad, students have to conduct themselves with dignity and discipline. They are certainly not told what to wear or what not to wear especially at informal functions. The motto that should be followed is liberty and equality. Dress is not and should not be a criterion to judge someone's character and morals.

Safety issues

Girls today are independent, can make their own decisions and have every right to choose what they will wear. They also have enough sense to dress according to the occasion, whether formal or informal. Such a notice only demonstrates the narrow mindset of IIT-Delhi authorities. However, it’s possible that they may have been thinking of the safety of the girls while issuing the notice.

Change mindset

Why are only girls issued notices on dress codes? Why not boys? Boys can wear shorts and capris but girls have to wear a 'full covered dress' for even informal and personal events! This is nothing but gender discrimination. Girls don’t need to change their dressing style. Rather, society should change its parochial mindset and attitude.

There is nothing wrong in keeping the dress code. As what we wear hampers our psyche in that manner. Keeping plane decent dress will help students concentrate in what they are studying. But dress code shuold be implemented for both.

Well, I personally feel that one should maintain his/her dignity. Be it a boy or a girl, everyone needs to follow the moral code of conduct. But imposing restrictions on dress code will not help to curb the situation. The institution should work to improve the activities of the students.

I feel strongly that one has their own right on their dress .

Its not a fair decision. Each and every person has the right to choose.Imposing restriction to a particular gender shows gender inequality.Wearing short dress doesn''t mean that she is indecent. This is 21st century, its time to change such old mentality. Its not about the length of the dress, its in the way people see.

In colleges and school events it very much necessary to wear descent dress so as to maintain healthy environment, so there is nothing wrong in keeping a dress code. But exclusively for a particular race or gender is not at all exceptable , it shows the backward mindset.

Panchami.M K L E Society School, Nagarbhavi

If there is a dress code, then it should be both for girls and boys in order to maintain a healthy atmosphere and make students realize there limitation. But there is no point in imposing dress code only for girls? This shows how back ward our society is. Why should only the girls be asked to change?

Yasmin Tabbassum SHERWOOD CONVENT SCHOOL(D L F)

First of all its simply "Informal" .So why there should be a dress code? Just for the sake of society''s mindset? Its completely unfair to ask girls for changing there dress code because of the narrow minded peoples. Instead the boys should be asked to behave properly and society must teach them to be in discipline and respect the girls. And its totally wrong to judge a person with his or her clothes. IIT-Delhi should take there notice back as it promotes discrimination, not equality.

Akshita Pandey LILAVATI BAI PODAR (A)-SCRUZ

I do not think that there is any need of keeping a dress code for informal events. People should have the liberty to wear whatever they want to do and in whichever colour. Dress codes should be implemented on formal events like a school function or some conference.

Shubham Bansal AMITY SCHOOL (GURGAON SEC_46)

i don''t think that dress code can help in any way. to some extent, it is okay. but, everywhere dress code can''t be followed.this also restricts the people''s freedom .......

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

There should be a dress code because it represents the school. When there is no dress code, students tend to get distracted and cannot study properly. They will be busy thinking about what they will wear the next day. They will be under peer pressure. They think that they will get ignored or bullied if the do not dress well. They will spend a lot of money behind clothes. So it is better to have dress code.
