Is Indian Justice System Sluggish?

Expressing concern over the "undue delay" in the existing justice delivery system, former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan said that "more than 67.5 per cent" of the prisoners in the country's jails are under trials.

The former chief justice made a fervent call for "speeding up" the justice delivery system and "reducing the large number of pending cases" in different session and high courts in the country.

The issue of unusually high pending cases in different courts is unique to India and a big burden on the common man, he said.

"Even civil cases take a long time and this is detrimental to the rights of the people and the fate of their families," he said.

The former CJI called for "filling up the large number of vacancies in the judiciary" on priority basis to tackle the critical issue.

India is definitely lagging behind in the justice providing route. There are many cases still pending. This means that people will get justice but not at the correct time and also a delayed one. There needs to be more vacancies filled up and more people appointed in the judiciary sector.

Yes, the Indian justice system is so sluggish that it has become almost comical to get a final verdict after years and even decades of hearings. Prisoners roam around freely while the innocent are behind the bars just because of the delay caused. Loads of files are pending before the court of law. A truthful person is compelled to think twice before filing a case against any injustice done to him. This is just because the system is sluggish in announcing the verdict.

justice is a very crucial and undeniable one . it should be given to all irrespective of status and age . We indians want justice but mainly for celebs but we don''t care about a common man . In India there are lot of cases without any result to show as its yet pending . So i conclude by saying that justice should be given to everyone and in a fast and veracious way.

Yes, India''s judicial system is undoubtedly sluggish. It isn''t surprising that legal proceedings are the least-preferred mechanism for resolving disputes in India. However, this is frequent in many advanced countries as they fail to provide quick and high quality justice to their citizens.

yes, India has one of the slowest judicial systems in the world. There have been instances where people have been waiting in prison on trials which have lasted decades. isn''t it unfair to these people and their families. The fact that most prisoners are only on trial is not an admirable feat. whether this is the result of a lack of judicial officers or not, some form of long awaited action should bring these people to justice
