Disappointed with the Assam government for using captive elephants to demolish illegal settlements by encroachers in Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, animal activists have called for banning such activity.

Using captive elephants to demolish illegal settlements in Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary is unfortunate. Such acts can cause severe injury to the animals and the public as well. Machines should be used to demolish illegal encroachments.

Using innocent elephants for demolition was  unfair on the part of the Assam government. There should be a law against using animals for purposes like demolition. Such acts are archaic and inhuman, especially in an era where machines can do it easily.

Madhav Chadha, class XI, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh

The captive elephant concept is itself infuriating and inhuman. Though permitted in India, elephants should not be utilised for any controversial activity, especially demolishing structures. Instead of letting the animal lead a free life, the government is using it as a weapon for its own ends. This is unacceptable.

even though settlements are illegal but they are settlements, thousands of people reside in there. We cannot just destroy these with massive elephants. Rule of law in India is supreme, it should be respected and people should be first trialed before uprooting their settlements.

Elephants are animals, and not wrecking machines. It is considered as our duty to protect and tame these creatures. Using them for demolition will do nothing but aggravate them all the more and harm them. On the other hand, demolishing the homes of numerous people, even if illegal, is not a very considerate thing to do. The Government should investigate further into this matter.

Settlements are having citizen, you can''t just use elephants as demolishing instrument just for moving settlers. These animals are needed to be tamed or they will wreak havoc again.
