Bhavana: Are We Trying To Create Gender Inequality By Assigning Colours

The colours weren't gender-specific at first. But later people began to specify colours according to gender. Pink, which is more delicate and dainty, is for girls. Blue, being a more decided and stronger colour is for boys. Are we trying to create a gender inequality by assigning colors for gender? What is your take?

MELISSA FERNANDES FATIMA H SCH-AMBERNATH

Yes these are small things that matter....we are bringing colors and indirectly trying to bring gender inequality... This should be stopped..

Varun Tripathi dps bopal

There is no real reason why pink is for girls and blue is for boys. They are simply colors, and their roles for each gender have changed in the past. The reason today that blue is associated with boys and vice versa is because that is what has been marketing to the public in the last 70 or so years.

You are right! People started doing this and we couldn''t easily take it out of our head. But I don''t think this creates gender inequality now. I''m not saying you are wrong, you are right in your own ways. Because when it comes for gender equality we should consider eunuch too. We didn''t assign any colour to for the third gender.

Prathamesh Kandale HILLGREEN SCHOOL

absolutely right!these days boys and girls are too obsessed with their specific colour code.colours do not uphold any gender or religion.if blue colour shows strength and determination, why should''nt it be for girls?.you are perfectly aware of the great women personalities.this is why western countries are ahead of us.they let their young one choose their own lifestyle.we should not create gender inequality but instead give liberty to choose any colour code to our young ones

Shweta Ullala National Academy For Learning

This is very true! I love blue and pink equally and there should not be any rule stating that boys are not allowed to wear pink and girls should not wear blue!

It''s good you brought this topic up!

Antara Bose Shri Shikshayatan School

Yes we are creating gender inequality... Pink is not always the colour for the girls...and these specific colours indirectly brings the gender inequality

bhavya katyal Sachdeva Public School

the society has indeed already created a gender inequality by assigning specific colors for boys and girls. these stereotypical norms set by the previous generations help promote and encourage these biases in young minds too. instead the society should promote gender neutrality by abolishing this ideology through creating awareness.

Yes, although colors aren''t actually gender specific, people have made their minds up like that. Boys who like or wear pink are mocked for it and it is the same with girls who don''t like pink

Yes, our society has already fixed stereotypes for both girls and boys. The categorisation of the society on the basis of colours gives rise to differences among people. The pre- defined stereotypes by the society mentally challenge both boys and girls to accommodate in the circumstances which further contributes in sowing the seeds of gender inequality between boys and girls.

JOMILIN JOHN ST.ANTHONY'S SR.SEC SCHOOL

I think this is a very common observation which I have seen especially among the young minds. Mostly girls prefer wearing pink dresses and boys do choose ordinary colors. But its not right to say that '''' why are you dressed like a girl'''' to a boy. This is really unacceptable. Again somewhere or the other we are promoting gender inequality among us even though it''s a minor case. Colors show diversity so better to stop divisions like this and promote equality in the society.

Shivani A Amrita Vidyalayam -Nesapakkam

This differentiation based on colours is what changes into discrimination based on one''s gender. Girls are always dressed up in pink and given dolls while boys are dressed up in blue or other strong colours and given toy cars. This must be stopped to bring gender equality. Both girls and boys must be allowed to choose what colour they like and more importantly what they want to do in life.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

Yes, I feel that gender disparity is a nuisance. Why is it necessary to have "pink" as your favorite colour if you are a girl and "blue" if you are a boy? This paves way to stereotype pink as a girlish color and blue as a boyish one. The latest trend of wearing snapback also goes in favor of boys. I remember when I went out for a walk for a walk wearing my snapback, everyone was staring me.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

It''s not meant for boys only, girls can also wear it. Every individual has his/her own likes and dislikes and no one can be forced to change his/her likes and dislikes according to the social norms.

Prerana S Kulkarni CLARENCE PUBLIC SCHOOL

It is always these small things that implant notions into the minds of younger kids - that blue signifies strength and pink signifies delicateness. Why should only boys be strong and only girls be delicate? Everyone should have a mixture of both these traits in them. Only then, the world will be fair to both genders. This whole colour-coding based on gender must be stopped, or else our dream of gender equality will never come true.

Haya Naved FATHER AGNEL SCHOOL(GAUTAM NAGAR)

I absolutely agree. Pink is seen as something sweet and delicate.

Yes,we are trying to do gender inequality by assigning colours to each gender. We are trying to make the world a more backward place like it was in the 16th or the 17th century. We are living in the world of 21st century where we are arranging awareness programs, campaigns to make people understand men and women are equal, then why there are colours assigned for each gender.

Prashant Yadav MATA JAI KAUR SCHOOL(ASHOK VIHAR)

Yes it is to some extent and it is not the case of colours only,it is seen everywhere. One should stop this at his/her own level as possible.

souptiki nandi ADARSH PUBLIC SCH CBLK

Specifying colours for girls and boys on one side and talking about gender inequality, this is not a good complement for gender inequality. The motive of gender inequality is to prove that everything is for everyone. Colours are not anything but just a choice and this is just a silly stereotype.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

Right!!! This does promote discrimination. It has been a common practice since too long. Plus these days, it is no such thing that all girls like pink and all boys, blue. I cannot say if boys like pink but can assure that many girls including me love blue. Plus, black is the universal favourite of a majority of people these days.

Abdul Fattah Success The School

Yes we can bring equality by choosing red colour. This colour dersses are worn by girls as well as boys. This colour is strong and bright.

at least now we realised

Inaya Zainab Delhi Public School,Bopal

You''re right!People just create gender equality on a regular basis by stating that pink should only be for girls and blue for boys.

SPARSH DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL(VASUNDHRA)

I agree with the statement as we have been using this as a marketing strategy since 70 years. This creates a gender inequality as blue color showcases strength and determination where as pink showcases love and sweetness so why is blue only used for boys why not girls? This is because of our mentality but now things are changing, everyone in today''s society is considered equal. Therefore only one color should be used for both which showcases sense of equality.....

Manish Gogoi KV NAL CAMPUS

Yes , the society is very well striving towards gender inequality . By equating the boys to blue and the girls to pink kids are being made to feel alienated from the opposite gender . However notions nowadays have changed .Colours nowadays do not promote much gender inequality. It all depends on the mindset and not just the colours .

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

Yes it''s true. Even I have seen, boys feel embarrassed to wear Pink color dress and similarly girls love to have Pink coloured things. But nowadays things are changing and young generations are coming out from this color bias.

Aarushi Kakkar NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

That is actually very true if a boy wears pink people stare at him , if a girl likes a color like blue many people still say it is not girl like. In fact before the 1940''s blue was a female color and pink for the males . In this context I feel we should be able to do what we want to.

Roma Ramcoumar Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Yes and it is true. if the paint of room is pink people assume the room belongs to a girl . This is something wrong . You cant judge the gender with colors .colors speak our reality and character .

K.Sandeepkumar Bethel Mat Hr Sec School

Yes.All are segregating colors and things saying that ''This is for girls''''This is for boys''. There is too much male dominance in one place and female dominance in another place. This should be stopped.

Krutika Agrawal The Millennium School

According to my point of view, its a rubbish fact to specify colors for gender. But, to my utmost disappointment, people practice these kinds of things as a part of their day to day life. Who teaches kids that pink is for girls and blue for boys? Friends, its us who create such rubbish thoughts in the minds of kids. In a world where people have reached moon, we are still hanging unto these discrimination. This is just ridiculous.

Myiesha Chaudhary N.L.Dalmia H

This is one of the small things which create inequality between gender. Colors are not at all divided or separated in groups of boys and girls. If we say that pink dainty and delicate colors are for girls and stronger and bolder colors for boys,it''s wrong and we should stop this.

Advika Devanshi UDGAM SCHOOL

Very well said Bhavana. I am a girl but my favorite colour is blue. That does not mean that I am boyish. Assigning colours to boys and girls is stupidity. It creates a sense of discrimination in the public minds. On one hand we are trying to finish gender inequality but by assigning colours are we really helping?

Anamika Ghai CARMEL CONVENT SCH SEC 9 CHD

Assigning colours to various genders is yet another effective way to make a toddler believe in discrimination. It divides the people in unspeakable and unknowable ways. It truly reflects on human nature and the need of humans to always differentiate between men and women for the worse. It is poison which none of us sees now. Common example of everyday discriminatory problems.

Ananya Bhardwaj Venkateshwar Global School

Yes,we are. Pink and blue are just colors but we have assigned them for specific genders. And if someone tries to break this trend, for example, if a boy wears a pink shirt to school or some where else people start teasing that person. This mentality should be changed and one should be allowed to choose any color he/she wants according to their choice.

Vihaan Chaudhary SHERWOOD CONVENT SCHOOL(D L F)

color is a form of expression and art and it''s significance in gender roles is null. gender is a liberty of self expression and nothing should be assigned to assume it. in the 16th century pink was a color wore by men and blue by women as depicted in ancient novels and plays. by assigning color with gender we are assigning personality traits to it as well, as blue is a color for being strong and manly it makes boys stone cold and hollow which results in violence either domestic or other

PRATYUSHA DASGUPTA D.A.V. PUBLIC SCHOOL,NEW PANVEL

Colours are just colours. They should never be associated with genders. It is fault of the parents that they induce these illogical stereotypes into the delicate brains of their kids from childhood itself. This thought ought to be changed.

Sandhya Srinivas TRIVENI PUBLIC SCHOOL

i agree with you ... gender inequality and gender inequality based on colors should be stopped. Firstly, when we ask boys which colour they like and if they reply as pink or red, they are teased as a girl or reasons are different . This is not done . I am glad you bought up this topic . Colors should not be differentiated .

Animikha Dutta Dhar Mahadevi Birla World Academy

Different colours for genders is a illogical stereotype which should be rejected.
