Bhavana: Are Marksheets Just A Piece Of Paper?

There's a saying that if you get good grades ,then you have obtained knowledge. There's a huge difference between grades and knowledge . Study should not be for marks but for knowledge. Marks may fade away with time but knowledge will stay forever. According to my opinion, marks is something created by the education system to evaluate "what you understand" and knowledge is information or skill obtained by experiences and education . The one dilemma that continues to live in the mind of a student is whether to focus on grades or on knowledge? Your mark sheet is just a piece of paper ,it cannot decide your destiny. What is your take?

Well, I partially agree with you. Practically, knowledge has an edge over grades. But living in a country like India where "Cramming System" prevails and where cut-offs are reaching sky-high, mark sheet cannot be taken as just a piece of paper. They in true sense decide our future. Marks tell whether the student is passed and promoted to the next class or not. Getting a good percentage in Class XII helps a student get into one of the best Indian colleges, this fact can''t be denied.

I agree that the marksheet is just a piece of paper as it just tells you your performance for a specific chunk that you studied from the textbooks. I totally agree that marks, atleast in the lower grades, that is, until grade 8, do not matter much so long as you pass. No one is going to ask you your marks when you grow up, the knowledge you acquire will be tested.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

There is a difference between studying and learning. Learning is when you acquire knowledge about a topic because it interests you. Learning does not always involve gaining knowledge from textbooks, it involves practical thinking. However studying is when you have to know things from textbooks only and do not have to apply any practical sense or thought. It also need not necessarily interest you. I believe most of us do not learn for our exams, we study.

Aishwarya Iyer Deens Academy

So if we are doing something we do not like, and getting our marksheet for that, it is useless. This si because your heart is usually not into learning new things, most of us just study it for the sake of scoring good marks and getting appreciation. This is why I belive, marksheets are, to a great extent, just sheets of paper. However, in higher grades, these do matter to get a good college, etc as Himanshi says.

i agree with bhavana as now as the world is getting digital we should have a soft copy in place of hard copy it will save paper and will also support the digital india movement by our prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi...

Defiantly marks is not everything but it is something. To acquire marks one has to have a great amount of knowledge, not all toppers have good knowledge but at the same time not all below average students have good knowledge. Many factors should be taken into consideration

shubha tanaya Delhi School of Excellence Attapur

according to me marks just show how you performed on that day, but knowledge shows what you learned all the days. When you become a successful person no one asks about the marks you received. It is only your hard-work, determination and confidence and not the marks you receive.True sign of intelligence is knowledge and not marks or percentage.

PRATYUSHA DASGUPTA D.A.V. PUBLIC SCHOOL,NEW PANVEL

In lower grades, most of the students excelled in their exams because of parrot learning. But recently, in higher grades,CBSE has begun to put generalized at the same time witty questions to test the knowledge and understanding of the candidates. Moreover final marksheet decides one''s future career. So I disagree that marksheet is just a mere piece of paper.

ABHIGYAN SINGH Harmony International School , Kharghar

No because it sometimes show our hard work.

Akshita Pandey LILAVATI BAI PODAR (A)-SCRUZ

Superb question, Bhavana. I feel that mark sheets are just a piece of paper and they cannot decide our future. It tells us the performance report of only how much we have learnt, not the qualities that are there in us.

Chaitanya Batra Bhai Parmanand Vidya Mandir

obviously not, they matter a lot. I partially agree to you. they help us to know our potential and our ranking not only in our class but also in our standard.

K.Tanushree ARMY PUBLIC SCHOOL

I partially agree with this because our grades in each subject help us analyze our grip over each subject and makes us aware of our strenghts and weaknesses over each subject. But some students are more capable of just writing exams, they maybe performing well in practicals, some may be good in theory, etc. For such students marksheets cannot decide their capabilities because everyone''s interests are different.

Hemalatha.G Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary Scho

Definitely it is just a piece of paper. One can''t show their talents through exams.

Aastha Goyal ST.Mary's School

Marksheet is not just a piece of paper. It enables us to analyse our mistake and try to avoid them.It is not just a piece of paper but your upcoming future. It is not a exam taken by the teacher but it is an exam for ourselves to know how much we have prepeared and taken it seriously. And the point of saving paper ,exam is a way to test your knowledge

Abhirami Gangadharan AMRITA VIDYALAYAM, PERAMBAVOOR

I don''t completely agree with this.Marks does matter. But marks cannot decide how knowledgeable a person is.Our knowledge is something which cannot be expressed in a piece of paper. Our grades shows our memory power and theoretical knowledge. But practical knowledge matters the most. Our grades doesn''t decide our future. Our future depends on our hardwork. Not all the great personalities are educated. Its their hardwork which brought them here.

MEGHA BANSAL RAINBOW ENGLISH SCHOOL (JANAKPURI)

Just a clear answer to this, check out some members of your family, you will find atleast one member of your family who doesn''t have much formal education but knowledge more than your graduate siblings and the did got to him/her for information when they used to study.

Hemalatha.G Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary Scho

You are absolutely right. Taking what we learn to our hearts and implementing them on life is much important than marks. Yes, they are just a piece of paper!

priyanka singhal HILLWOOD ACADEMY(PREET VIHAR)

A two digit number could not be the judging criteria for our knowledge. The dilemma will last forever till our education system will weigh practical knowledge more than just marks.

iffat aziz khan ryan international school

IFFAT KHAN,RYAN INTL. SCHOOL,NOIDA I partially agree with the point. That is, Because in some way if we get good marks we are destined to be promoted to better schools.Marks also tell us in which place we are right now, and which place we should be. When we see are marks, sometimes we get a little embarrassed which makes us work more harder but even if we get good marks we learn the fun way of learning.

Vaishnavi S NAGARJUNA VIDYANIKETAN

I don''t think mark sheets decide our destiny. It depends on the knowledge that we have amassed. For example, Bill Gates was a college out. If he had looked forward for his grades, there wouldn''thave been Microsoft today. I think mark sheets have a little role in shaping our future.

Devika Singh DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL GURGAON SEC45 D

I partially agree with you, Bhavana. There is a huge difference between obtaining knowledge and cramming just for exams. Knowledge stays with you forever whereas you may forget the capital of Costa Rica. But no, marksheets are not just pieces of paper, especially in such a populated country as India where there is a ton of competition. Marksheets tell you where you stand and your level of knowledge. But there is always hope and scope of improvement if you do not perform upto.

Devika Singh DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL GURGAON SEC45 D

While exams are no joke, they aren''t the end of the world, either.

Archisha Ghosh VIDYA VALLEY

Its true that marksheets are just a piece of paper. But it is necessary at the same time for the future ahead. But I think so a lot of attention need to be given on skills because later on nobody will pay attention towards yoyr marks, they will only put attention towards your skills and knowledge. This is how the education system could be better according to most of the students.

I agree that marksheets are just a piece of paper because they just show what level you have obtained in your whole academic year. As I know through all that I have learnt till 8th grade, this is just to assess your knowledge. The main part of your school is not to get good grades only, but also to understand the concepts and capture what you learnt.
