Heera Nawaz On Her Brother

This article intends to explore the special bond and relationship between my brother and me against the backdrop of life in New York City in the 1960s. Those were the days of the Beatles, the hippies with their `Flower Power’ culture and the initial days of man landing on the moon.

In New York City, our life was very different from what it is now, as we did not have computers or mobile phones and pretty much most of our lives were spent in the innocence of outdoor playful activities. How do I describe my brother, as a child? He was like any other young boy except that he had a streak of mischievousness and naughtiness up his sleeve. In hindsight, I remember him throwing tantrums when things didn’t go his way, but on the whole, he was a well-liked and charming person whom people easily took a fancy to.

In fact, his name is Munna, which made me years later jokingly remark that he was so playful and prank-loving that the movie, “Munnabhai, M.B.B.S.” could have been named after him! During those faraway heady days of the 1960s when my brother and me were in New York City, we looked forward to each day when we could revel in what life had to offer us. At that time, our father was working in the UN and hence we children easily got admission at the UN International School. We were pleased to learn that most of our classmates were from countries around the world.

Though I was always the proverbial bookworm, my brother had intellectual capability and confidence to be a topper even though he wasn’t particularly hardworking. He did try to excel though to beat out the girls in his class, especially since our neighbour, Upinder Singh, was his classmate, who is incidentally Dr. Manmohan Singh’s daughter! As children, my brother and me were extremely fond of sports and outdoor games for recreation. We were obsessed with the American national game of baseball. Just as children can now sprout out names of football teams, like Real Madrid and Mohan Bagan, we would cheer for baseball teams, like Mets and Yankees. We even collected the cards of famous baseball players that came free when purchasing bumble gum! We were also carefree enough to indulge in games specific to places like New York City, which being in the temperate zone, has extremely cold winters and warm summers. When winter came, my brother and I would don our mufflers, sweaters and mittens and make for the huge snowy hill, which allowed us to toboggan down, which was downright thrilling!

Several young children in our locality, particularly a young Spanish boy called Haimi, had grown to look upon my brother as an inspiring mentor and something of a cult figure. As we got ready to leave for the airport, they all gathered around us and with tears in their eyes, they bade us goodbye and good luck. Haimi hugged my brother tightly and said, “Munna, we will miss you forever. You were like an elder brother to me.” I knew what he meant. Yes, that day, I knew that we had left a part of our innocent childhood behind….. forever.

I love my brother very much and I get angry when someone shouts at him .

Yes Afsha, brothers are very special. Later in life, they take the place of our parents when our parents get old and expire. Brothers are those special human beings who will stand by us even when they hear contrary reports about us from outsiders. They know their sisters well and will protect them.
