Winter Care Tips For Animals

There are some animals that cope well with cold weather and there are others that don't. As they say prevention is better than cure so if you have earlier experience of problems then it is better to take preventive winter care measures for pets. Here are a few animals care tips that should be useful.

Keep your pet indoors

Does your pet spend most of the time in the backyard? You might want to keep her indoors during the freezing months, especially if you live in bitterly cold areas. No one wants an icicle for a pet they’re simply not that cuddly.

Be seen

Due to Daylight Savings, many of us are relegated to walking our dogs in the dark. Keep yourself and your dog are safe by wearing reflective gear (clothing, leash, collar, etc) and keeping your dog close when walking on the street.

Be careful with your dog near water

If you live near a pond, lake or other inland water source that tends to freeze over during cold weather, take care when letting your dog off the leash. Animals can easily fall through the ice, and it's very difficult for them to escape on their own or for humans to rescue them.

No More Frozen Dinners!

Because it takes more energy to stay warm when it's cold, outdoor animals eat more during the winter. Likewise, fresh, running water is vital for maintaining your pet's health.

Leave them home

Just as hot cars are dangerous for pets in the summer, cold cars pose a threat as well! Only take your pets in the car if it is necessary, and never leave them unattended.

Build an outdoor shelter for your pet

If your pet spends most of their time outside and simply can't stand the thought of staying indoors all day, its important to have a winter-proof outdoor shelter for them. Make sure it's dry and big enough for your pet to lie down comfortably. Also make sure it's raised a few inches above the ground for protection from the snow.

You may need to feed your pet more food than usual

Of course your pets always need food and water, but in the winter when it's cold, they'll burn more calories to stay warm. Keep them well fed and hydrated and they'll be a lot more comfortable.

Always buy nontoxic antifreeze

Antifreeze has a sweet smell and taste that can be very attractive to animals, especially hungry animals looking to escape the cold. However, it's highly poisonous if consumed, so buying a nontoxic brand is an easy way to make sure it won't harm a creature who just wanted a nice dinner.

Let your pet's fur grow out for the winter

If you regularly shave or cut your dog's hair, let them go natural during the winter. It will help them stay insulated and warm. Plus, exposed skin on an animal can increase its chances of frostbite and hypothermia.

Speak out if you see a pet left outside

No pet deserves to be left out in the cold. If you see one, let their owner know that you're concerned. If nothing changes, get proactive and report it to concern department or the police. Document the date, time, and location and take pictures. Make no mistake: Animal abuse is a crime.
