Learn Responsibility After Adopting Pets

It's been less than two years since Malu came into our lives, and about ten months since Snoopy joined her.
Malu, a street puppy, was less than a month old when a friend rescued her from the middle of the road. She was too small to be by herself and urgently needed a home. My cousin Pranav and I were living carefree bachelor lives and I knew it wouldn't be easy to take care of a puppy, considering we were still figuring out how to take care of ourselves. But I knew the basics and I'd always wanted a dog. Pranav had never before been around animals of any kind, but bravely agreed to share the responsibility. And so we got Malu home.

I had thought it was all going to be fun and games but toilet training a puppy by two amateurs was nothing like we imagined. Keeping the house clean went from a beginner level task to an expert level one. Just when we thought we had it all figured out, a friend asked us if we could take in another dog temporarily. She was found abandoned because she was too old. Malu was not a very naughty puppy, and we hoped she would get along with the older dog and so brought Snoopy home too. Snoopy had two broken legs and no bladder control and we were back to square one.

It took a lot of sacrifice, and we had to let go of late nights and night outs. Snoopy needs to be bathed often as she is a spitz cross. And it took effort to keep two intelligent animals well-fed and occupied. Caging them was not an option for us.

They have so much energy and curiosity, it would kill their spirit to be in a cage all the time. But we went all the way and now, both Malu and Snoopy are reasonably well-mannered, toilet-trained girls. Malu loves to play in the water and she is super cute. Snoopy responds to our commands now.

And the humans in charge of them too have also matured similarly. We have learnt to function as a unit, the cleaning, walking, feeding, everything. We can't leave them alone at home so we often travel to our hometown from Kochi over the weekend with them. I would tell anyone who wants to adopt a dog, it is a lot of work but it worth every bit of it. We have learnt the art of being responsible. Coming home to these two is brilliant. They completely lose their minds with joy.

It really feels like unconditional love.
I can completely believe how dogs have evolved to become man's (or woman's) best friend. Unfortunately, we seem to be killing a lot of them in Kerala. I'd hate for dogs to evolve into animals who think they have to defend themselves against man. They seem to respond to kindness so positively, that I think all we have to do is to respect their body language and be kind.

In the meantime, Malu is now evolved enough to know that the best time to beg for food is when friends are over!
