14-yr-old Bags Top Google Award

Advay Ramesh, 14, a Chennai-based student has won the prestigious Google Community Impact Award for creating a device that enhances fishermen’s safety. He speaks about the project

Q Can you tell us about the project you have created?

It all began with a letter I wrote, telling fishermen not to cross the boundary line at sea. Second, I told them that they can catch fish in a particular area which can be marked with a point on a map. If they save the location on the map, they can come back to it. Researchers can study more about fish at this location. The project also warns of tsunamis.

Q How did you get interested in a project of this kind?

I had submitted the idea to ISRO during the Mangalyaan mission. There were many problems that local fishermen were facing and I really wanted to help them. When I came to know about the Google Science Fair, I thought of improvisations. That’s exactly what I did.

Q Were you always interested in

science? I have always been fascinated by atoms and algorithms. This interest led me towards the project.

Q What’s next?

I want to use technology to help society and solve the smallest, to the most intricate, problems. Then I want to study further in the US.

Who is Ramesh?

A 14-year-old from Chennai, he studies in class X at Chennai's National Public School ØHe has won $10,000 in prize money and a year-long mentorship from Scientific American magazine

About his project:

The project entitled ‘FishErmen Lifeline Terminal’ (FELT), helps to improve fishermen’s safety and productivity using the Standard Position Services (SPS).
