My School Project: Geothermal Power Plant

Vasu Joshi, a student of Chandigarh, designs a model on making electricity

What it is?
  • Geothermal energy is a renewable and non-polluting source of energy. Keeping this in mind and understanding the urgency of such resources, a geothermal power plant was made.
  • The project is a working model of  geothermal power plant. It explains how we can use the energy stored deep inside the Earth, in the form of heat, into steam. The steam can be used to run turbines and generate electricity.

Salient features
  • Most of the geothermal energy cannot be seen, but its visible features are volcanoes, hot springs, geysers, and fumaroles.
  • Over the years, geologists have used many ways to find geothermal resources. Study of aerial photographs and geological maps have helped them in the understanding to a great degree.
  • At present, many places in the world are working on geothermal energy. The best known geothermal energy sources in the US are located in the western states and Hawaii.
  • Geothermal power plants do not burn fuel to generate electricity as  fossil fuel plants do. Geothermal power plants release less than one to four per cent of the amount of carbon dioxide (C02) emitted by coal plants.

More facts
  • Hydrothermal resources at high temperatures (300 to 700 F) can be used to make electricity.
  • Unlike atomic power plants where geothermal energy is produced, this source of energy is pollution free.
  • The resources used to produce electricity using geothermal plant can be used by drilling wells into the Earth and piping hot water to the surface.

How I went about it
  • To make the project look more appealing, an exact adaptation of the diagram was made in the final model of the power plant.
  • Welding was an important feature as the parts had to be shown effectively.
  • The project involved tremendous research so all details had to be noted along with the functioning.

What we can learn...
  • How energy can be used in its most natural form and non pollutant processes can bring about the best results.
  • It enhances one’s understanding of electric power and its production from a simple perspective.
  • With limited resources, making optimum use of what we have is important. The project works in that direction.
    7.5/10

"Under the guidance of my teachers, I learnt the functioning of a power plant, surely a one-of-its-kind experience. It gave a boost to my understanding of how this energy works."
Vasu Joshi, class IX, St Xavier’s School, Chandigarh

"This project is a very useful  one, but its limitation lies in the fact that it is a bit expensive, as it involves a lot of study in the geography of the region"
Dharmendra Pant, Physics teacher, St Xavier’s Sr Sec School, Sec 44, Chandigarh
