5 Ways Tech Impacted Indians in 2016

‘E-transaction karo’

It came at the fag end of the year, but demonetisation led to the year’s biggest tech impact on the country. A large number of Indians across ages and demographics took to payment by mobile wallet, thanks to the cash crunch. The pursuit of happiness is still on.

Data on discount even before

demonetisation, there was a big queueing session where people lined up to buy Reliance Jio SIMs with its offer of free 4G calls and data till March 31. But those who didn’t bite the Jio bait got lucky with the competition pulling up its socks and pulling down its prices.

Working out, Pokemon style

In the summer of 2016, there was a rush of young people appearing in parks, streets, and markets, eyes glued to their phones, fingers swiping towards imaginary creatures. They were all playing Pokemon Go, the monstrously successful augmented reality game that saw double the downloads of dating app Tinder within days of its launch. It has now finally seen an official launch in India.

Hello Snapchat Didis

India saw its first Snapchat celebrity with actor and comic Mallika Dua’s hilarious “make-up didi” exploits this year. The ephemeral photo sharing app also gave us its first controversy with comedian Tanmay Bhat’s Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar impressions. ”Face-swap” made it to the vocabulary of political goons and disinterested digital novices alike.

We Netflixed and chilled

International on-demand video streaming services finally came to the country in January this year. No more VPN-ing on slow connections and paying in dollars to watch a show. The initial excitement came tempered with grumbles about the locally tailored catalogue being inadequate. Season finale for 2016? Amazon Prime Video launched in India too.
