Social Media Etiquette

In March this year, the Government of France issued a directive stating that even kids have a right to privacy and parents who post embarrassing photos of their kids on social networking sites can face prison or hefty fine once the kid grows up. For those who fancy putting up pictures and videos of their kids doing 'cute things' might want to reconsider what they post. A look at other antics that may also be considered annoying...
Announcing unsure break-ups: Earlier this year, UpMa fans were in for a shock when actor Upen Patel announced his break-up with actress Karishma Tanna on social media. However, he later cleared the air claiming that all was well and it was only due to a fight. Fooling around people, victimising oneself and breaking up only to kiss and make up are tricks one should keep to oneself lest they regret it later.

Tagging people: Not everyone 'feels awesome' with you and 46 others! Tagging people in posts, photos and videos that do not feature them or are irrelevant and do not concern them can get extremely bothering. Similarly, asking people to like or share your post, unless of course they want to, is a big no.

Whiny, soppy posts: If using social media as a dumping ground to vent out all your emotions is your thing, avoid. Everyone has their fair share of sorrows and unless updating soppy posts on social media solves your problem, skip it. Many a times, ranting about your work or targeting your colleagues with an indirect status that starts with 'some people need to...' can get annoying. Stop being a complaint box.

The '1 like = 1 respect' sorts: Uploading sympathetic, patriotic posts and demanding respect by means of a single click is disrespectful right away. Only if giving respect was so easy! In the same breath, posts with 'Pass it to 9 people to avoid being unlucky in love' should not receive any love. And attention.

Uploading an entire album of your recent vacation: Right from the time you booked your tickets online to boarding your flight and capturing every sight, smell and sound may be alright but uploading 347 photos from a 10-day trip needs to stop. You could devote the same amount of time by narrating your travel tales to those interested and rather be resourceful with your suggestions.

Unfiltered posts: Be it 'boast posts' of your feats, checking-in at the coffee shop next door or over-flashed images of food and people, oversharing kills. Those going overboard with sharing posts and not thinking twice over need to calm down.

A few tips for online etiquette
  1. Be sensitive to others' needs and have a high level of empathy while interacting online, as it's not about being right or wrong.
  2. Healthy bonding and communication should be key.
  3. Sort out your issues with someone on a one-to-one basis. Do not involve five others in your personal issues, as all human beings are wired differently.
  4. Never be impulsive while answering to a provocative comment. Pause and reflect. The online world is filled with people waiting to unleash their vengeance on someone. You wouldn't want to waste your time on one of them.
  5. If you sense a situation may escalate out of control, refuse to be a part of it and log off. People may say some pretty hurtful things in the heat of the moment, only to regret them later. Spare yourself the heartburn.

People really create a clutter on social media. They become too extrovert which many a times turns out to be ditzy. So, control your emotions while using social media. Don''t let them drain out.

Cyber Bullying is at its all-time high. We need to make sure that we follow these etiquettes or we could get into big trouble. We need to be very careful about what we do online.
