Young Critics Review The Big Friendly Giant

Steven Spielberg spent 18 months searching for the right cast to star in the 'Big Friendly Giant.'. Did Sophie and the Giants do justice to one of Roald Dahl's best novels? Students tell us more...

We Tell You Why BFG struck a Chord With us

  • Mark Rylance is a great actor. He may not be as humourous and witty as Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but Rylance holds his own as the slender 'friendly'giant in the monstrous Giant country. His simple mannerisms and clear speech is a winner with young cinema goers.
  • The film makes us understand that language is actually pretty easy and pretty much fun. Roald Dahl is known for his unique dictionary and kudos to Spielberg to incorporate all that into this one without making it seem too forced.
  • A thing about the gigantic screenplay; well done. It transported us to another world and back seamlessly.
  • Costumes in period dramas can be quite an eye sore. But not in this one. From Sophie's frocks to the Queen's dresses, everything fit the bill.
  • Roald Dahl's essence and his style was maintained throughout. Another BIG PLUS for a fan like me.

A few things could have been better

  • Unlike Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this film lacks purpose. Would have been better if the story and the background of Sophie was fully fleshed out.
  • The emotional bond between the protagonists were not well developed.
  • There were moments when you felt the film could have been a little more fast paced.
