Singing carols has become the most popular Christmas Eve tradition. In fact, one can’t imagine Christmas without the carols. It adds to the festive spirit and make Christmas even more beautiful.
Here are the 10 most popular Christmas carols of all time.

1) The 12 Days of Christmas
The song was first published in England in 1780. ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ carol is about the grand gifts given on each of the 12 days of Christmas, and is amongst the most preferred carols.

2) The First Noel
Being a traditional classical English carol, it consists of one musical phrase repeated twice, followed by a refrain which is a variation on that phrase.

3) I Saw Three Ships
This is another popular and traditional Christmas carol from England. It is about the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century, sailing into Bethlehem.

4) We Wish You A Merry Christmas
‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ certainly passes the test of time. This Christmas song is about Carollers being given Christmas treat for singing to wealthy members of the community. Till date, it remains one of the most popular Christmas carols of all time.

5) Joy To The World
First published in 1719 in Watts’ collection, this popular Christmas carol glorifies Jesus Christ’s triumphant return at the end of the age.

6) O Come, All Ye Faithful
Frederick Oakeley, the English Catholic priest, came up with the English translation of ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ and it remains one of the most popular Christmas carol in most English speaking countries.

7) Good King Wenceslas
The story of Good King Wenceslas, who braved harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant, is a popular Christmas carol. It is sung throughout the Christmas season.

8) O Holy Night
The well-known Christmas carol ‘O Holy Night’ is about the birth of Jesus and of mankind’s redemption.

9) Silent Night
Composed in 1818 in Austria, the popular Christmas carol ‘Silent Night’ was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in March 2011.

10) Ding Dong Merrily On High
Quite popular among children, the text to ‘Ding Dong Merrily On High’ was originally in Latin—‘Gloria in Excelsis Deo’. People have a blast in Christmas season, thanks to this wonderful carol.
