How Burgers Are Eaten Around The World

The hamburger is a fast-food staple throughout the world, but there are many versions served in restaurants globally. What differentiates them? The protein, the toppings and, sometimes, even the buns. This Hamburger Day , which is tomorrow, we give you the lowdown on some burger versions from around the world...

Rice Burger, Eat Asia: Rice is a staple in this part of the world -China, Vietnam and Japan, for instance, substituting a regular burger bun with compressed rice is pretty popular. And instead of the usual beef patty, anything from grilled pork and beef strips to shrimp fritters are used.

Chivito, Uruguay:  This burger-like sandwich typically contains beef churrasco (a grilled meat preparation), mozzarella, tomatoes, mayonnaise, olives, bacon, ham and eggs. And it's usually accompanied by fries.

Pljeskavica, Servia: This is Serbia's traditional minced meat dish and is usually made with two or more different types of protein -such as beef, lamb, pork or veal -with onions. It's generally eaten as a main course, but can be eaten burger-style with lepinja, a kind of flatbread.

Burger With The Lot, Australia and New Zealand: This is pretty much the same kind of deal as in the US, except that the toppings could include pineapple, sliced beets, a fried egg and bacon.

Hamburg Steak, Germany: This is where the idea for the modern hamburger came from. It's a steak that's been chopped into tiny pieces and re-made into a patty, but is served without a bun.

Vada Pav, India:
This is widely considered pretty much the only exclusively vegetarian burger in the world. The vada pav consists of a potato patty that's been deep-fried in chickpea flour and placed in a soft bun.
