Meet Kevin- A Batman Fan Since 1966

At the age of 55, Kevin Silva’s fetish for Batman-related items would seem like an oddity. But that isn’t really surprising since he started his collection when he was only five…

Q Can you tell us about your ‘Batman’ collection?

I hold the Guinness record for the “World’s Largest Batman collection”. I have more than 3,500 individual pieces. It includes movie props, toys, action figures, comics, and trading cards. Items as far back as 1940, all the way up to 2016.

Q When did you first start collecting ‘Batman’?

I have some nine items from the time I was 5 years old. My mom put those in a box that I carried around for years. That was about 50 years back.

Q How much work was involved in getting your collection ready for Guinness?

I wasn’t really interested when they contacted me; too much work counting and documenting everything. Guinness was relentless! I gave in, took three days off from work, cataloged all my items in a spreadsheet, took pictures. They sent the certificate about three weeks later. I’ve had the Guinness record for over two years.

Q Why did you start collecting ‘Batman’?

It all started with the 1966 Batman TV show! I turned five on January 6 that year. The TV showed aired from January 12. My dad bought a 19” colour TV for Christmas in 1965. My first image of Batman, on colour, well, let’s just say, ‘burnt’ a hole in my head! I’ve been a fan ever since. Warner Bros released a Blue-ray box set of the 1966 TV show in 2014. All three seasons, a book, a Hot Wheels Batmobile, a set of ’66 trading cards, and a bonus DVD; “Holy Memorabilia Batman”.  Adam West (Batman), three other collectors. Can you imagine what that meant to me?

Q What are the most unique items in your collection? And the most expensive?

A custom-made Batman outfit from the 1966 TV show. I had it commissioned in 1998 for my collection. It is also the most expensive. Another prized possession is the Gotham City phone book, an actual prop from the show itself.

Q If a teenager wants to start a collection, how can they start?

You have to have a passion for collecting, whatever it may be for. I didn’t set out to break any records - that just happened.

- Find a center piece and build from there.

- E-bay, flea markets, garage sales, thrift shops are great places to find things.
