About Leading And Teaching

Sudha Gupta, Chairperson, Presidium group of schools talks about the need to remodel the education system as per the times for a holistic development of not only the children but also of the teachers for constant up gradation.

Suggest some ideas for fixing a broken school, one which is performing low both in academics and co-curricular domain?
It is important for each institution to have a vision, to define where they are coming from and where they want to go and then chalk a roadmap to achieve their goals and ambitions on time. A school should enable and empower students with theoretical and practical information. Teachers need to cultivate an appetite for learning, instead of being passive learners we have to transform them into keen students aspiring for the ultimate truth and knowledge.

Instil self-respect, positive discipline and pride in every individual at an early age. Strengthen the teacher-parent partnership. Parents and teachers have to work together and be aligned with the goal of inspiring and nurturing children to become happy, successful and empowered individuals.

While students get multiple report cards throughout the year, teachers lack similar feedback. Don't you think that even great teachers can get better with smart feedback?
Having a sound feedback mechanism will help teacher build capacity, enhance attitude towards the subject and students, empower them to be aware of and also correct their grey areas and more importantly it will enhance their performance. We should encourage the feedback sandwich approach which is compliment, correct, compliment.

Can both Arts and Sciences be taught together so as to create bold thinkers?
For a very long time, the Arts and Science were thought of as mutually exclusive. However, with our world being at the cusp of a digital revolution, we are witnessing technologies that are converging both the disciplines. We need to incorporate this in the academic field as well to be able to bring about the holistic growth of our students, empower them with logical reasoning while instilling in them creativity and imagination to think out of the box. Arithmetic, communication, creativity or critical thinking are not innate talents but have to be nurtured by using techniques, technologies and collaborations.

The arts and sciences have a similar aim to describe and explain. Science and technology create new mediums from which art, such as photography, electronic music and light shows, can spring forth

Children now can navigate the internet to achieve educational objectives. How has the internet revolutionized our perception of teaching?
Technology has the potential to enhance teacher-student relationships by breaking barriers and transforming students into their own advisers, content experts and coaches. With the influx of all information on internet, teachers play a pivotal role of equipping students to use this free information and channeling them in the right direction. It is important that teachers transform from being educators to becoming enablers and help students leverage data and knowledge to maximise their potential.

How can educators be trained to make classrooms come alive-to enthrall and teach at the same time?

Educators could provide a mentor, and conduct meaningful evaluations. Professionals from an external source would help to motivate, provide innovative ideas and give a fresh perspective to the teachers. Adequate resources are also a need. It is important to establish ongoing, open communication.

Snigdha Priya Kapoor PRESIDIUM SCHOOL INDIRAPURAM

I really agree with the point of teaching Arts and Science together as a bold and a strong thinker shall be born if this is done. This refers to new technology and people trying hard to make this world a cleaner and safer world.Mrs.Sudha mam came to our school []for the Science Fair was organized] and really appreciated the idea of an air purifier made up of waste materials. She really believes in digital thinking and is trying to cooperate with students.
