You Can Fix Your Life

Seeker: I work in an IT firm where colleagues downplay each other to impress the head. This creates a negative environment — people gossip about others. How can we remain positive in such situations and continue to believe in the power of positivity? — Akhil Rana, 29

Deepak Chopra: In every negative situation, there needs to be a single strategy that serves as your guideline for going forward. Most people get stuck in bad circumstance because they vacillate between choices, doing a little of each as the mood strikes them.

Sit down with pen and paper and make three columns for each of the choices: Fix things. Put up with it. Walk away. Under each column, list the reasons for why that strategy might be workable. Write down as many good reasons as you can reasonably devise.

Sit down with a new piece of paper and list 10 ways to put your strategy into action. Now pick one action and follow it through. Dealing with bad situations involves taking a risk; only stasis and inertia are risk free, and in the end, they often lead to worsening circumstances. n
