Will Demonetisation Curb Black Money?

Well, this is the question doing the rounds in various circles — after the initial enthusiasm — when PM Narendra Modi decided to scrap ` 500 and `1,000 notes. Despite the inconvenience caused, the public has so far been largely supportive of the demonetisation move. They hope it will fight corruption. But the long queues at banks and ATMs coupled with stories on how the rich are finding ways to convert their black money into white at the cost of the poor who are running out of cash is creating suspicion among many. What exactly is black money and how will it fulfill Modi’s vision of wiping out unaccounted for cash?

As many as 82% Indians favour the govt’s decision to demonetise ` 500 and ` 1,000 denomination currency notes. According to a survey by Inshorts in collaboration with IPSOS, 84% of the respondents think the govt is serious about curbing black money

Foreign media hails the move

Forbes:  In an article titled ‘India’s Great Bank Note Switch Appears To Be Working’, the article goes on to call the scheme “rather well done, a clever plan”.

New York Times: “The plan, top secret until Mr. Modi’s announcement, was hailed by financial analysts as bold and potentially transformational for India. It is also a high-stakes experiment,” the article said.

Does common man deserve the inconvenience?

Why not? If it’s for the larger interest of the nation. I agree there is a lot of discomfort, but that is a natural by-product of any change that comes. Weren’t we calling for the eradication of black money a few months ago? So if Modi has taken a step in that direction, isn’t it our responsibility to stand by him?

It's not just about eradicating black money but taking a step forward, which the previous governments failed to do. It is always easy to criticise but difficult to initiate. And therefore, standing in queues without complaining is our responsibility if we are law-abiding citizens of this country.

In this case people with black money are making more noise. The common man has also been affected and day-to-day transactions have become difficult, but most people are welcoming the move. This whole initiative could have been handled better. Yet in the long run it is a good step taken.

The best move so far taken by Mr. Modi to curb the back money is the demonetization of 500rs and 1000rs notes which will give a massive blow for all the black money holders and induce a guilt feeling in them and make them to repay the taxes because they can''t hide their illegal practise for a longer time. Its happy that income tax department has received tax amount more than 4 crores which marks as a small step towards a corrupt free India.

It can help to unearth the black money to a large extent. But it cannot prevent the generation of black money altogether.

Modi has taken a wonderful and statesman-like move in a time when a shadow economy of black money is plaguing our nation. People who hoard and hide their stores of cash without paying taxes cannot hide anymore, as all their cash will go worthless. This will induce guilt and fear in those hoarding loads of black money, and drastically reduce corruption.

it will certainly curb corruption but for how long that is still to be figured out.

The surprise and top secret way demonetization of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 is a great move by Mr. Modi’s government on November 8th to catch unaware those who are modern day financial dacoits who are hurting Indian economy. Those who are genuine and sincere are no need to worry. Those who are evaders of tax will have a miserable time in the coming days. Also, government post December 30th must crackdown on real estate and Gold cartels in which even more black money is invested in fake ownership.

For the betterment of billion plus Indians a few million crooks suffering is acceptable. It can surely curb the black money prevelant in INDIA and in the currency but what about ill-earned money stored in foreign heaven banks and in physical form such as gold and real estaten ? However this move will eradicate the printing of fake notes and can frighten the black money holders to some extent. Howbeit, as days are passing by, people are questioning this move by the PM fpr the inconvenience caused.

Yes, it will surely curb black money for a specific period of time and give a tight slap on all the black money holders and make them feel ashamed of what they have done. This move will help to grow a feeling of guilt on all the black money holders.

Demonetisation is really a good move by our P.M. As a true citizen, we must abide by the decision made by the government. But still some more steps should be taken to permanently eradicate black money from our country.
