What Should School Curriculum Focus On?

Ayaan Sharma, a five year old child, feels elated when Indian sportstars win their respective matches and is heartbroken when they lose one. He says Jai Hind on seeing the national flag. Does he do it on his own? or has he been taught in a subject? "He has it ingrained in him," says Neha Sharma, Ayaan's mother. "I tell him about freedom fighters, so does his school. With time, I feel he will have all the knowledge that one needs to know about his country," she says adding that, "if you introduce a new subject to the ongoing system, it will only mess his view of looking at things which by default is patriotic."

The Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) has received several ideas from ministers on how to make students more patriotic. The ideas range from building more military-focused schools, teaching biographies of national heroes and making the singing of the national anthem mandatory for children. All this to create an “ecosystem of morals, ethics and patriotism” for the children.

But do we need to introduce such classes or subjects at all when we already have a lesson in history everywhere? "Schools should prepare the child for life- for the challenges that they will have to face in a world that is moving forward at an amazing speed," says Manveen Chaddha, principal, Velammal World School, Chennai. She says, it is important to teach the children critical thinking, collaboration, good communication skills as "that will enable them to analyse the new innovations, reflect on what they already know, research and find out what they need to know" adding that, they will find the real meaning of ethics ,values and patriotism invariably.

"There is no need to introduce a new subject in schools for making students patriotic. School assembly is the right place where we can mould students towards patriotism through patriotic talk, significance of the day, especially birth and death anniversary of our great heroes. During co-curricular activities, school should focus more on the ethics and moral values so that students can inculcate and implement the thoughts in their life and move towards the betterment of the society," says Rajendra Mishra, principal, CIPS-Kapsi,Nagpur.

To be a real patriot, one must have clear and true view of history, and rise above the divisiveness that plagues the Indian society in the name of religion, caste, creed or language, or even economic positions, says Sukriti Pal, assistant teacher, Raisina Bengali Sr Sec School, Delhi. "Children mustn't feel they are being taught an extra subject; it should be integrated well in the teachings that they get in classes. They should be able to compare their mental readiness to protect their country militarily or in their honest endeavours," she adds.

"Indian curriculum is more theory-centric than practical," says Hema Nair, principal, DAV-Mumbai.  "They need more exposure and should be given more field visits especially to that of the defence forces, police, intelligence agencies, etc.," she says adding that steps such as these should be taken- introducing students to the lives of defence personnel, police, fire brigade personnel, etc; show AVs and documentaries based on the sacrifices made by Indian freedom fighters; everyday dedicate about 15 minutes to discussing pre Independence and Post Independence India, its security challenges and how Indian forces are meeting those.

What the curriculum currently demands is a structure that not only teaches the students about their past but also intermix with their present and future. "Schools should introduce more skill- based education. The SUPW and CCA activities must be taught by skilled professionals, having necessary degrees; so that, the students who are not very bright in studies can at least, pursue vocational training after completing class XII. As far as patriotism and moral values  is concerned, it is something they imbibe as they grow, special lectures on the same are uncalled for," says Swarnadipa Chattopadhyay, educator , MAV, Ahmedabad.

Lopamudra Batabyal, teacher, St. Philomela's Public School, Bengaluru echoes similar thoughts. "There is a need for schools to teach moral values, art, Indian music and also include physical activity and team work activities. With these should be included discipline and the existing rules of examinations.  This way we will prepare children to face the actual hardships of life with a complete knowledge of our culture and origin," she says.

Youth Reporters Tell What Should The School Curriculum Comprise

What we need as a student is practical knowledge and not just bookish one. A student should have the choice to choose their own subject from as low as fifth grade. Patriotism comes naturally, why force someone to become patriotic?
Ishika Gupta, class X, SD Public School, Delhi

There should be more focus on creative and applied arts as a lot of our school curriculum is based on theory. Army training, NCC, etc are courses that aim at making students more patriotic.
Hitanshi Thakkar, class IX, New Horizon Public School, Airoli, Navi Mumbai

It is important to make the students aware of the present situation. Hence, robotics and Biotechnology should be introduced at a lower level. Special coaching should be arranged in school for meritorious students facing economic constraints, who want to appear for different entrance examinations.
Dwaipayan Saha, Class XI, St Augustine's Day School, Kolkata

Certificate-based courses  and on field experiences should be included in curriculum to add on value to the students, instead of adding something which is already there in our blood. These two add-ons will definitely improve our understanding of real world and help us in dealing with life situations in better way.
Niharika Deshpande, class XII, Sakar School, Ahmedabad

The focus of the school curriculum should be towards a practical approach for all subjects instead of just theory. It is good to have a system in schools for students to understand more the outside world and its ways. This will equip us better to face the future. New topics such as sex education is the need of the hour in India, which will help students in the long run in becoming better citizens and human beings.

School should put focus on how to make children active in various things....

UDHAYBIR KAMALDEEP SINGH SANDHU St. Anthony''s High School, Versova

ACTUALLY, THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM SHOULD FOCUS ON MORE ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE COMPETITIONS LIKE DEBATE''S AND QUIZ''S WHO''S TOPICS WOULD BE BASED ON THE SUBJECTS WHICH THE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING, THIS WOULD HELP THE STUDENTS TO GO MORE DEEP IN DETAIL ABOUT A PARTICULAR SUBJECT''S TOPIC. THIS WOULD MAKE STUDENT''S CURIOUS TO KNOW ABOUT THE FACTS OF THE PARTICULAR TOPICS. THUS, IT WOULD BE MAKING THE STUDENTS TO KNOW THE TOPIC MORE IN DETAIL WHICH WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR THEIR ACADEMICS AS WELL

School should focus on its overall development rather than focusing on anything. School should encourage its students to get in various fields and try its best. It should also take care of the interest in the students mind to take them to a particular direction. We should definately have a system away from the reach of whole world and the best.

The focus of school cirriculum should be on practical wisdom,we all would love to have a system in which what we are taught is akin to what we are seeing in outside world. In my opinion we don''t need to add anymore subject in our syllabus rather we should try to make learning through experiencing the nature than cramming from books.

P S Geethanjali Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan S.V Vidyalaya

The school curriculum should focus on Hands on learning rather than just saying the students to cram everything they gave in classwork and what is written in the textbook. There should be hands on learning everything should be practical rather than theory-centric.Subjects such as Robotics should be introduced in the school as in the future there would be advanced technology.Even the school should update its system according to the latest advancements.

According to me, schools should not just teach the usual subjects, but should equally focus on moral values, current affairs, the problems we are facing nowadays etc. More than marks what matters is basic values and manners which we can carry out in our life. So I think current affairs is one subject which can be added where the news can be explained to the students..

When observing the society and various incidents happening around , I strongly feel that sex education should be made as topic for the school curriculum from grade 7th .

Well today''s education system revolves around rote learning. The subjects and the single academic focus often deprives the child of his capabilities. I think that curriculum shouldn''t be a burden instead subjects should be taught by a practical perspective whereby the child along with learning enjoys the class too ! Yes definitely we should have a system wherein what we are taught in school is akin to what we are seeing in the outside world

Some more topics that should also be included in our curriculum can be teaching moral values and lifeskills to children. Also promotion of cultural activities is important. Moral values would often help us in the long run therefore focus should be on making a child capable and steadfast rather than encouraging competition.

Damini PADUA HIGH SCHOOL-MANKHURD

schools should focus on things like having quiz in the subjet of maths science etc......but in the meantime they should also focus on various activities like drawing, having work experience period, competions and more.....

Gargi Chakraborty Amrita Vidyalayam -Nesapakkam

I think the school should not only focus on teaching the subject, but should also teach values needed for life. While teaching any subject there should be many activities related to the subject, it will help the students understand better about the subject. This will also help the students to enjoy while learning.

Himanshi Dhawan Saffron Public School

“Try Not to Become a Man of Success. Rather Become a Man of Value.” I strongly feel that schools should lay emphasis on this famous saying. Schools should make children involve in numerous activities with which they can learn about human emotions such as kindness etc.

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

I would say that school''s must throw light on preaching that ''Life is not merely a race course to drive about with a crass agenda to move ahead, way further than the surplus, by dealing with all varied, dour twists and turns and pushing the others way back.'' Rather they should tell students that indeed life is a jeopardizing race rally, but only when you know why you are on the race course can you make the best of your being.

JIYA TOMAR B G S NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL

Thus, I would suggest that schools focus on moral- building and inculcate in us a strengthened conscience for life to move on.

Saurabh Modi SAKAR

A school should offer knowledge along with the moral virtues. The school curriculum should be set in such a way that a student gains the intelligence, self confidence, true concepts, discipline and practical knowledge instead of bookish knowledge and so preventing the students from becoming BOOKISH PARROT. The school should give opportunities to their blowing and innocent students and should note that the students along with the bookish knowledge should gain the practical terms of knowledge.

RIYA MITTAL Convent of Jesus and Mary

School curriculum should focus on understanding rather than rote learning . Children should be told about their surroundings and teaching should include examples from daily life.
