What Book Will You Gift Your BFF

Books are magic and the best way to spread cheerfulness around. And what better way to use the special festive time of Christmas to give your best friend a book that reminds you of her/him?

Our youth reporters are full of ideas. Tell us yours in the comments section.

I would give the book The Long Goodbye by Meghan O'Rourke, to my BFF who has recently lost his mother due to cancer. I feel he will be able to relate himself with the writer as O'Rourke also lost her mother at an early age due to cancer. I am sure the book would make him feel better as there are so many ways mentioned in it to get over this type of condition.

I would definitely gift my friend The Diary of A Young Girl by Anne Frank. While it is true that we do not live in such tumultuous and terrifying times, there are many issues that she faces that we can relate. We are in the same age group as Anne was and she does talk about how difficult it seems for her to understand her parents or deal with her own mood swings. There is also a call to persevere in the hope that their lives will turn around for the better - something very courageous given what they were undergoing. I feel this book is a must-read for all teenagers.

Tanushree Jain, class X, Gitanjali Devshala, Hyderabad

I would gift my BFF the entire Harry Potter series as they were the books that first brought us together, without our love for Harry Potter, we would never have bonded so well.

Surabhi Paraki, class IX, Orchids - The International School, Bengaluru

If I were to gift my BFF a book, it would be Because You'll Never Meet Me by Leah Thomas. This book is about two friends, who talk to each other through letters, never meeting. One of them is allergic to electricity and the other is living because of the pump in his heart. They are both victims of the same experiment. I know this book would soothe my BFF because this book just revolves around friendship and the meaning is so good that I just can't help but relate how I get to meet my BFF everyday.

Aditi Rao, class VII, Edify School, Bengaluru

Well, it's December and the holiday season has started. The season of Christmas, food, fun and gifts. This holiday season I would love to gift my BFF a book(we both love books!) and the book which I would love to gift is The Sisterhood of Travelling Pants. I want to gift her this book because it's very close to me and two of the story's main characters basically reflect our lives. It is actually about the adventures of four girls in their summer vacation. I want to gift it to her because it will be an inspiration for her as it tells us to take chances in life because if we do not take risks we might not experience the best part of our lives. It will comfort her in her difficulties because the book itself speaks about how to deal with challenges of life and overcome them with courage.
Upasana Behera, class IX, DPS Newtown, Kolkata

As 2016 is gonna end, I would love to gift her 'House of Hades' firstly because we are fantasy lovers as it is a portal to escape reality. This will solve all our problems as we escape. Secondly, it teaches that even in worst situations, you shouldn't loose faith because where there's will there's a way. It also shows strong bond between friends who in hell like sit never abandon each other. The book clearly states, "It's not over until you win ".

Vidhi Khamele, class XI, Bhavan’s BP Vidya Mandir, Nagpur

I'd give him, 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho. I want my friend to read this book in order to understand how important it is to accept the signs, omens and hints that life gives us, which we at times, ignore. The book will give him perspective in life, a better clarity about what's essential to his 'being' and the path that he is supposed to tread in life.

Ayera Choudhary, class XI, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula

By sharing a book with a person whom you trust the most is the way to bring her to your imaginary world. And the best person to share a book with is none other than your BFF. I would like to share the book 'The Lost Girls' by Jennifer Baggett, Holly C Corbett and Amanda Pressner with my BFF, because the writers of this book have done what we have always dreamt of. Yes, a world tour! Three friends, four continents, on unconventional detour around the world. They explore nearly 12 countries and the experiences they encounter on their way furthermore solidifies their bond.

Megha Joshy Mathew class XI KV Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram

I would gift my best friend every book from the Nancy Drew series. This is because it keeps reminding me of a 'detective group' we had created in the seventh grade. I think it'd help her become happier when she's low because it would remind her of how failed our group was, and that would make her laugh. It would remind her that we had formed the group hoping to solve cases like the ones Nancy does, and that would definitely make her smile.
Harini M S, class XI, Nagarjuna Vidyaniketan, Bengaluru

I would gift Tom Sawyer. This is because the book shows the ups and downs in the life of a boy who is almost as old as me and my friend. It shows the friendship between Tom Sawyer and his friend, Huckleberry Finn in the story. Their thrilling adventures and the close friendship can lift anybody's spirits.  Like them, we too were always ready for some adventure, no matter how hard they seemed. Like them we too are willing to do anything for each other. So this book would make the perfect gift. Every time he reads it, he would remember the things we did together, which will cheer him up.

Shreyas N Bharadwaj, class VIII, Presidency NLO, Bengaluru

I'd gift my best friend with Anne Frank's 'The diary of a young girl.' It's a book that changes you in a lot of ways. It's written by someone who has feelings like so many of us. It helps us evolve, and it's so calming and good to read because you can relate on so many levels and at so many parts. By the end of the book, you're just a little different in your outlook at life. So I'd definitely give her that.

Tanvi Kulkarni, class X, Bal Shikshan Mandir, Pune

I would like to give my friend 'Who Moved My Cheese', by Spencer Johnson.  It's a small but fabulous book. It tells us about how different people act differently to the changes in our life. It also tell us how to accept the changes in our life and find a way to solve it. Here cheese is a metaphor for what you want in life. It is a book useful to people of all ages.
Siddhi Hol, class X, GG International School, Pune

I'd give my best friend Sylvia Plath's 'The Bell Jar' or JD Salinger's 'The Catcher in the Rye'. I found both books to be very impactful. They promote ideas of freedom and independance (which happen to be essential for today's society). It's a must read for all students before they take their big step into the real world!

Virika Thorat, class X, GG International School, Pune
